Get a regular HDMI cable from Monoprice. Then include a HDMI->DVI adapter. Allows you to reuse the cable when you get a TV that has HDMI later on. Plus Monoprice have extremely reasonable pricing onthe cables. One thing to be careful though, for some reason I can't get the PS3 on DVI to display when plugged into a projector at work. The projector does support 1080p natively too. Don't know why and never figured it out. Just FYI.
There's tutorials on installing Ubuntu on PS3. It used to be you need to use a flash drive to put otheros.bld on the drive to install, but with firmware 1.90, that is included, so you just put the CD in, go in to XMB, select install otherOS and voila it installs. Yellowdog seems to install with the least amount of effort though.
