You can increase the performance of an "interference" 4-2-1 header by installing a crossover pipe (either H or X) near or at the first "y" intersection(i.e. 1-4 and 2-3 section). Read the following articles for more details.

It's also possible to modified the Fed Spec header by adding a taper collector such as a megaphone or adding a crossover pipe.
