Katapl : who are you?
Potential Buyer Q's

This may not be the best place for a first post, but oh well. Anyway, I'm currently looking at an '03 GTS 5 speed. In the past I've owned two S13 240's. One having an SR20 and the other having a CA18. I suppose I'm pretty hooked on boost.

I know an NA FWD V6 is going to be a ton different, but I want something newer and reliable. I understand there's a small bit of decent aftermarket for the V6, and even some turbo setups I saw. Well, a friend of mine is simply saying not to go with the V6. Rather to get something older with an old 4g63. I don't trust everything he says, and I don't want an older DSM that isn't going to run worth a damn and will be sitting half the year.

Is the GTS reliable and are you guys happy with the minimal, but growing aftermarket?

The V6 models are pretty reliable, but if you're going to go the boost route, I recommend getting the 4 cylinder. The 4G64 in those have proven to take boost very well unlike its V6 brethren, especially the GTS with slightly higher compression ratio. Please view the Forced Induction section of this forum for more in-depth information.

Makes sense. What's the deal with so much hate from 1g and 2g guys? I wasn't looking for a tsi or gsx because I wanted something reliable. Why's everyone so pissed at 3g's? Just because they're not AWD or factory turbo?

Honestly if you're looking for boost, you should look into the 4G64 GS/RS models like Inferno said, or better yet go for a 2G 4G63T model like your friend suggested.

If you try to boost the V6 your car will most likely be sitting a lot longer than a 2G would unless you're extremely lucky or you got some deep pockets

The V6 Eclipses are very reliable if left N/A. When the 6G72 engines see boost all sorts of crazy things tend to happen. Granted there are people who have done it successfully with great results, but the general trend is that it's a long and problem filled journey.

I'm perfectly content with the aftermarket. But then again I don't have any crazy horsepower goals. I'm not sure if our aftermarket is growing, perhaps at a snail's pace. Most companies have moved their R+D resources over to the 4G.

Pretty much. Many people think it's a disgrace to the Eclipse line, since it's not a "DSM", nevermind the fact the 2G technically isn't one either, given the fact Diamond Star Motors officially dissolved right before the 2G saw production. The 4G IMO is an even bigger disgrace, being that it weighs almost as much as a full-size luxury sedan.

I just don't really want a 2g since they're older. I'd love something newer. I want a car with minimal problems. The V6 is something like 203 hp, isn't it? It sounds like a great daily car and I still love the way 3g's look. A friend of mine has a 2g gs and I hate the interior on that thing. Given, the 3g doesn't seem a whole lot better, but at least it doesn't have that 90's econobox feel to it.

Personally, I think the 3g/2g Stratus is a great car. I have had zero reliability issues with this car and for a daily driver with simple mods, it is a very nice car.

If you just want a 3G because its newer and more reliable, then make it LOOK nice and don't try to make it a damn race car. Intake and a high quality exhaust and focus on the exterior, you can make a pretty decent looking car.

The V6 GTS will be about 190HP to the wheels with intake/exhaust.

Don't by a 2G if you wan't it for reliability unless you know how to tear down and rebuild the 4G63. Most of the used ones now are about 10 years old and have seen their fair share of abuse by dumbass teens if they aren't wrapped around a poll or rotting in a junkyard. Its a GREAT car when its running but your going to want to set it on fire when it's not.

If you want reliability, do as Hijacker said and don't mod it too much, just do some simple bolt ons and focus on the looks. Don't get an auto V6 unless you want to have trans work done on it eventually. If you want something a little quicker look for the 2000 GTs since they don't have pre-cats, other then that a 5spd GTS is a fine pick.

If you do want to go turbo, go ahead and get the 4G64 since you can turbo that engine so easily over night without really breaking the bank (minus the tuning part).
