Boring ol 6G74 Build
Hi there,
I just wanted to share pics and experience with the build... I forgot how much fun it was to take apart an engine and then re-assemble it. So, you can see that I didn't wait to take pics of the complete engine when it arrived I just tore into the sucker: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I got the engine from a salvage yard out of a 2003 Diamonte with 82K on the clock for $571. After getting a good look at the crank and pistons I was very pleased with my purchase everything looked really clean and within tolerance. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In Retrospect, I wasted a whole day painting that beast to make it look pretty cause I can hardly tell when I look in the engine bay. And, of course, I did it after I sent the block and heads to the Machinist. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Finally, the rebuild begins!!!!! A side note here... I hate plasti-Guage!!! hahah Oh and "bleeding" those damn lash adjusters also sux hard! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Okay by now I have lost track of the pics urls and what pics they represent so the below should be a mix of tearing out the old engine and trans and hopefully showing the ball joints I had to deal with to remove the axles... I don't have an air compressor so it was all sweat and profanity trying to hammer them out. If I had to give one suggestion to anyone it would be to buy a freakin air compressor and some air tools... which I will be getting soon!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The engine is in and I have been driving for about a week... I still need to make some adjustments to my exhaust and I need to buy a 74 Throttle body with out Traction control but so far I am enjoying the fruits of my labor!! Also, a little thing that confused me was which starter locator plate to use... well I just ended up using the SLP from the 72 I swapped out and it works great without any modification. I will try to attach a crappy droid video I took when I first started it up... It was late and very loud as I was too exhausted to move onto installing the downpipe before firing it up. Also, very special thanks to SilverTune for helping clear up a vacuum issue and thanks to Tx4codeman for the tune, Dragon for the writeup... Just Awesome! |

Yep I purchased a tune from tx4codeman...
I had the machinist resurface the block, put new freeze plugs in, and hone the cylinders... he then resurfaced the heads and did a mild port and polish... that was about $350 for all that... As for the mods they are pretty standard aem cai, headers, tune, stage 2 clutch, polyurethane mounts... my gt has almost 220k on the clock so I replaced the lower control arms and axles... But I read somewhere on here that I would just want more and that person was right so I'm kinda pissed cause I am going to have to rip that motor out again to beef up the rotating assembly to make way for a Turbo Damn!!!!! I did use the 72 cams but I kept the stock 10:1 compression so if I decide to Turbo the thing I will have to get different pistons and lower the compression to 8.5... no LSD so I really don't know what's next as there are many options available and money and time are factors... haha I'm sure all of you know that lol

stock is 9:1. that is why at some point i am going to try out 11:1 pistons with heavy head work.

Factory is 9:1 on all 6g74's except the VRX motor which would've been clearly labelled if it were one. I'm surprised you did so little while you had it apart, especially since it only had a few miles on it. Balance the rotating assembly with regapped rings and APR rod bolts/mains you'd be set for 350whp. But if you're going to build it, you better go big.

Yep I know... but my goal in the beginning was to have a daily driver with some added power... now in hindsight I want to do alot more... so I will be planning that build in the meanwhile... I am leaning toward fi so I started out reading that section and I am amazed at all the information available

I have to agree with r/tvo3.8. Build the 3.8. Use 3.8 block, crank, heads, 3.5 rods, and some custom low cr pistons. Balance the whole works and go from there. The heads WILL make a huge difference in the build, Boostzealot proved that. Cody is the tuning man, if you can get him to follow through.
