With the pervasiveness of Live View modes from DSLR makers, it is only a matter of time before similar technology brings a “movie mode” to DSLRs. While the ability to record video is a common feature among point & shoot cameras, technological challenges make the incorporation of a video recording more difficult in DSLRs. A recently published patent application by inventor Hiroshi Terada may change all of this. The patent addresses many of the technological hurdles that have prevented incorporation of a movie mode into DSLRs.

As we all know, DSLRs are designed for optimal performance in capturing still images - and DSLR manufacturers have truly raised the bar over the past couple of years. Accordingly, DSLRs are specialist tools that have been optimized to have a very narrow focus tolerance and an ever-increasing auto-focus speed. These features are not quite conducive to smooth video capture. Additionally, the field-of-view changes, albeit slightly, during auto-focus operation. Finally, fast and accurate hand-held auto-focus is dependent up accurate phase-difference AF evaluation, which requires a mirror to reflect the image to the AF sensor.

As you can see, getting live image to the image sensor and capturing smooth, in-focus video seems difficult to achieve without sacrificing some still image capture properties of DSLRs. These obstacles, among others, are what Mr. Terada attempts to overcome in his patent application.

I agree Jason. I don't even use my movie mode on the S3 myself. I don't see anyone that's been using a DSLR for quite sometime using it. But I see a lot of people that's going from P&S to an entry-level DSLR will see this feature appealing. I doubt companies will be putting this feature on a professional DSLR body

Never know, Nikon did put Live View on the D3. On the other hand, I could see LV being useful for tethered studio shooting or macro.

this is gayer than the live view. in trying to beat each other out, the manufacturers are making lame features. leave the movie and live view stuff on the P&S cameras!

I have a mic on my 1D. I can add notes to each photo. I think it records them as an MP3.

A keypad so you can call your friends might be the next DSLR feature?

I like gadgets and tech but i do agree, leave it alone. I for one will have no use for a crappy quality video out of my DSLR. If I wanted video, I'd get a video camera to begin with. I hope "they" don't all decide it needs to be added and inflate the price for everyone who has no use for it.

The video on the P&S makes sense because both the still and the video are, at least what i'd consider, sub par. meaning that both are meant for those quick shots that you want while you're out with your friends at the bar or on your way into or from work. a DSLR is meant to be a tool not a toy. although yes, I do call mine a toy. but they are meant to take a photo and to be creative. the video from a DSLR is going to suck just as bad as from a P&S camera so the people that buy a $1K+ DSLR want it to make PHOTOS. if they wanted to make a video they'd buy a $500+ video camera or just buy a cheap P&S to bring with them in their pocket.
