Nikon D700 - finally!

It's about damn time Nikon released a small FX ("full-frame") camera. It just might be the perfect camera (for my use), though I don't intend to drop $3,000 to find out.

well i was gonna say that it was going to kick Canon's 1Ds ass until I saw that it was only a 12mp sensor.

eh, wierd. I guess that camera is supposed to compete with the $1500 Canon 5D, which will soon be replaced by what I'm sure will be at least a 16mp camera. So in a way they did what canon did whoever they used the same 12mp sensor from their "big" camera?

That's pretty much right, except it has a LOT in common with the D3. The "removed" features are minor except maybe the 5% less coverage in the VF. I still find it odd that it has a built-in flash, though it does allow wireless triggering.

It also uses the same grip and batteries as the D300, so it's perfect for those wanting both DX and FX formats.

$3 kilobucks seems a bit high. I know that FF sensors are harder to make and cost more, but come on... I wonder why the big names charge so much? I guess because they can?

well the 5D was up there when it first came out. I think they were $3500. The 1Ds is $8K but it's been $8K ever since it was a 12mp camera and the price hasn't gone up. Same pretty much with the 1D. it's always been right in the mid $4K range. I have to read more on the features of these cameras though because so far, going on just some simple specs, I'm not impressed.
