aftermarket headunit/steering wheel controls?

Hey guys, i don't know much about electronics wiring so maybe you guys could help me. i am getting an aftermarket cd player from my brother that comes with a remote and mp3 player. The question is that my car has the button controls on the back of the steering wheel that i have grown to love. i know that the clock pod will not display anything but the clock with a new cd player, but i was wondering if the controls from the steering wheel could be re-routed to work with the new cd player. Has anybody done this before? Thanks
