Comes to us from days of yore, when the dramah in OT involved members getting into disputes with female members (sometimes over the validity of their claims to be female). Inevitably, other members would jump in, in defense of the female member, the motive of which seemingly due to their hardlegs... and thus the name was born.

These days, simply hitting on a female member qualifies you for membership of the HDL.
