Something I've noticed recently

I'll close the window, later coming back to OT. The threads show as if many have been updated with new posts. I click to go into them, nothing new, same stuff I'd previously read. I don't remember this happening before this past week or so.

Has anyone else noticed this as well?

I don't think I should have to refresh it if I've opened up a new window though.

I always click "new posts" out of habit. But, yes you are right about it messing up, just doesn't bother me.

It has to do with "sessions"; keeping "sessions" is one of the ways web servers keep track of users. For web sites that keep sessions, there's a session for each user that is online (that's how it can show if a user is online or offline, among other things).

Whenever a user opens a page, a session is created (or extended) by the server, which will expire in a specified amount of time--so let's say you open a thread, and need five minutes to read through everything that's posted in there. If the session expires in less than five minutes, it would think that you've left the site before you finished reading, and set you as "offline" at the time the session expired, and save this time in the database. When it does this, it marks all the messages posted before you "became offline" as "read." If it expires in more than five minutes, then you'll be able to go on to the next thread's latest, and correctly get the "last unread" message.

So, during the time when your session is being kept, the forum keeps track of the messages/threads you've read, but this is not stored in the database. If you close the browser, but come back before your session has expired, it may have lost the info on which threads you've read, and when, so it uses your "previous offline time" as the base, and all those threads you've read are shown as unread again.

I'm not sure how much of that made sense to you, hopefully my explanation isn't too complicated.

Anyway, that's why it would happen. If the session time is shortened, you would probably encounter this problem less, but it may mark more threads as "read" if you take a long time to read a thread or type a message.

If you "log out," then it forces the site to dump your session, and mark that time as the last time you went "offline," and will properly mark all the messages as "read."

Interesting. It's something that's only been happening recently so I wondered about it. Thanks Glenn. While I don't care that it does that, what you said makes sense.

On the discussion of refreshing... has anyone noticed a page will load half way and randomly refresh itself?
