If you had been here long enough to experience ALL of the issues AND you knew anything about webhosting, SQL, vBulletin, PHP, and whatever else I didn't take the time to list out - you would relize that BOTH of those errors are related to each other from the same root problem.

But of course, you just assume I'm being a dickhead because I searched and located the original thread and quoted how long it's been occuring to show that its most likely the same issue again, which in no way was a nooblet flame.

Anything else you care to add or are you done?

I know I'm going to regret not searching, but what does the existing server environment look like, logically? Everything running on one server (tier-1 layout), or is it split out into separate web/app/db servers? (tier 2/3 layout) What hardware is running this joint? Also, (I'm sure Ed's checked this already, but you never know) have you modified your *NIX Server Load Limit settings?

May I ask who you're trying to label as "premium members"? The mods maybe, but you aren't one. Do you mean those with a certain amount of posts? Or E-rep? Because you don't have much of either. How about those who have been here for years? You only have one year. The only conceivable meaning you could equate yourself to is the Contributors. Wouldn't that basically mean you have to pay to get on this site if there is a lot of traffic?

Not trying to piss you off, I know I'm still a noob, and have not contributed with money, but your statement should be clarified.

I read "premium members" as "contributors".

There wouldn't be any way to do this without QoS and traffic shaping, both of which you can't do over the public internets. You need to be on a private network.

I'm pretty sure he meant by being a "contributor". Surely if those of us are providing financial support to keep this place running should have priority over those who are not. I see where he's coming from (to some degree).

But then again, it's a moot point because there is no way to even entertain that concept where it would make sense. It's easier to just fix the damn thing than implement yet ANOTHER query to evaluate the "user status" on each member for each click (disregarding the fact of caching) to provide access or not during high volumes. The idea itself is just retarded.

I think it actually puts more load to the server by doing this priority thing.

Exactly why it's stupid.

I had the same basic idea I was trying to get across, but I didn't use internets language because I'm not as fluent. So yes, I agree.

Not to mention you can't even guarantee your connection without QoS. The web server fronting the application server just sees incoming requests and processes them all FIFO. It CANNOT differentiate between types of traffic. You have to shape the traffic at a lower level - in the routers - presenting traffic to the web server that's already been prioritized. Like I said before, you can't do that over the public internets. Your network needs to be private. (VPN, MPLS whatever)

by premium member i mean the ones who have donated to the site.

If that will make it worse then what exactly causes the problem Steve since you run a few sites? Is it something simple?

After the last outage a few minutes ago, I did some poking around. Without intimate knowledge of the infrastructure, it looks to me like the site is getting smoked on the DB side, and that the application server and DB server *may* be separated already. Looks like a hardware upgrade is required.

I have some servers I'm about to retire; I'm going to PM Ed to see if he wants one for an upgrade. (we're going full virtual now, so we don't need the extra hardware anymore)

I administrate/moderate a couple sites - I don't do the backend work on them, so I have absolutely no idea what the problem is.

I'm pretty sure this site isn't hosted in a basement - it's probably through a hosting facility such as mediatemple or any others where the services are managed by them. Either some settings need to be tweaked or he needs to upgrade whatever package this place is on. It's not exactly a booming site, so I would lean towards tweaking the settings.

Funny how not even a single moderator/administrator has even chimed in on this thread...

My next question to Ed was whether it's in a colo or fully managed. If it's colo, then I may have a DL585 they could use for the DB server, as the app server seems to be handling the load.

Most moderators are not involved in the database side of things. The issue is under investigation, and until there is positive evidence as to the exact cause of the problem and a solution there is nothing we can really comment on sadly.

And to address the "Premium Member/Contributor" thought, even if it were possible we would not do that because this has always been a free site for anyone interested about information about the 3G originally. It's why we created this forum after the last one was sold off to a business.

No input from me, I can build a PC blindfolded but know precisely jack shit about software. Mods do know it's cropped up again and are discussing it.

My understanding is that we already have our own dedicated servers for this site. Beyond knowing that, as MCMike has said, there's not much us mods can do.

Just to let you know, the problem was administrative in nature, and not technology related. Please let us know if anyone has any further issues.
