Red Hat Certifications
I took a the RH133 class a couple of weeks ago. That's the Red Hat Systems Administrator class bundle with the Red Hat Certified Technician exam at the end of it. Anyone considering taking his class, I highly recommend it. It was full of great information and the exam was pretty easy if you pay attention to everything taught in the class.
In retrospect, I wish I would have just taken the RH300 class and gotten the RHCE certificatoin, but I'm going to polish that off next year.

RH300 was easy actually. I took the class and the exam was on the last day. Looking back I could have just taken the exam and passed easily. 95% FTW!!!

LOL! The core Debian is harder to install compared than RH out of the box. But the Ubuntu version of Debian is soooo much easier than RH. Under the hood though, they're essentially the same thing. Only the package manager being different and the config file locations. The non-standard config file location between distros is one of the biggest headaches in Linux, that's why so many distros now try to make GUIs to wrap around that.

Well, congratulations man. I'm considering going more into some sort of web development courses we have at our local community college, got a few baby steps towards the program.
I believe my girlfriend's Dad is going for this certification already, actually, He may already have it since he got some little binder and Hat with redhat on it, not exactly sure what for but he is in IT at CSX. |

OT: I've been meaning to ask for a few months, what is that a picture of in your signature? Looks like the underside of a 3G hood but I'm not sure.

There's no inittab for Ubuntu since Edgy. It's a pain yes, but take a look at this page that explains it - Where can i find inittab in Ubuntu Edgy Eft (or Feisty Fawn) ? : mypapit gnu/linux blog

even C/C++. But your best bets are .NET or Java.Front end wise, be damned good with CSS and HTML first. Then you can move on to other script based languages like PHP, Perl, Ruby, etc...

Oh wow... I knew there was something fishy about the startup system. I've just started using Ubuntu since Fiesty was released a few months ago, but otherwise I've been doing Solaris Sparc and Red Hat Linux or similar distros since I came off of Slackware back in the day.

I got certified in Solaris 8 back in 2002. It's actually a very very nice UNIX OS. With Sol10 now, they're building it to be a lot more GNU compatible. I actually like that OS for most things. Only problem is the lack of driver support for newer toys out there

Yeah, the certificate course they offer has the basic essentials of computers, moves into E-commerce and such. And towards the end goes into Authoring, multimedia, Programming in JavaScript, Web programming 'Languages' and intro to programming with VB.net. So basically i'll get a good taste of both sides of the spectrum if I go with this certificate.
And honestly, I really don't have enough knowledge of the course to know what I want, throughout high school I was more into the hardware portion of computers, just basic building and installation, and basic software installation and troubleshooting, nothing major. |

I like Solaris a lot, but businesses simply cannot justify having the amount of Solaris boxes they used to. We have Solaris boxes that just did DNS, FTP, Samba and Web that are now all ported over to Red Hat boxes. We migrated from 20 Solaris boxes down to 3 Solaris and 6 Red Hat Boxes. The Solaris boxes that are still out there manage membership accounts and emergency road side assistance.

You know Solaris support is actually cheaper than RedHat now if you are running Solaris 10. Unless you're running a database or a backend application server like BEA, the basic $240 support plan is more than enough I would say. You just need support for 1 system and install the patches on all your machines. Since the OS itself is now free, you are licensed to run it on as many system as you want. Very much like RedHat, just cheaper and more reliable. I've had a Solaris 8 x86 server running at 20+ load average and still be able to SSH into it and run commands. Good luck doing that on a Linux system
