I've looked through another forum's opinions and benchmark of SP1 RC, and it seems to fix a lot of network issues, and made the OS generally more responsive. No improvement on gaming performance unfortunately.

uninstall it. It's a release candidate, not the final build.

A friend of mine has his laptop and 2 desktops set up for a local network but can't get the laptop with Vista to play nice. Will this help him be able to use shared files and printers on his network with the XP machines?

It seems its handling memory and resources much better. I've got it at work, and at home. Work is vista ultimate, and home is vista business.

Did you read the install files, it takes a couple restarts for it to be gone.

No, after the install the "Read-me file" said you would have to restart your computer a couple of times, after the install, for all their spam to disappear.

I haven't been able to install this, so I am not sure but thats what I read.

Looks like I read it wrong, it's there until you uninstall it.

Did some research and found this way to get the evaluation watermark off your desktop. I was able to install sp1 and this method worked for me.

Patched user32.dll.mui to Remove Evaluation Copy Text on Desktop of Vista SP1 RC1 » My Digital Life

After some experimentation and searching, seems this method doesn't work for 64-bit. Apparently, people have tried modifying the multiple copies of this file on 64-bit and it doesn't help.

Hopefully someone figures it out.

Tried it once more, used the manual method. Removed the indicated strings from both of these and rebooted. Still there. Verified with the Resource Editor app that the strings were indeed gone and my edited files were not replaced.

Hacked these two files so far.

C:\Windows\System32\en-us\user32.dll.mui
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\en-us\user32.dll.mui

Next...?

Finished installing SP1 RC last night

1 - I didn't see any watermark text on my desktop saying it's an evaluation copy I have Home Premium.

2 - It fixed the issue I was having The svchost.exe process tied with the Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service was constantly running in the background using 50% of the cpu. Now, it's no more

3 - It freed up exactly 25GB of my hard drive I'm guessing it was the page file or something

Okay, the watermark is there

Something weird happened last night. Windows prompted me to "Activate Vista" again. When I said yes, it said my product key was already in use Well duh! I'm using it, and activated it back in April when I installed Vista.

Has this happened to anyone else that installed SP1 RC?

I didn't have to reactivate - however, I began getting a ridiculous number of BSOD's and other random problems. SP1 RC has been uninstalled (which takes forever, fyi).

I've been getting it more frequently now. I don't see a message anywhere on how much longer I can run Vista. I'll probably uninstall SP1 RC soon It's been great except for the Windows Activation issue.

For me, it wouldnt let me login. Saying my key is invalid

I was able to get in somehow, run the paradox hack, and get it back to normal again

The paradox hack doesn't work with my computer. I tried it about three times, and then decided to just uninstall SP1 RC.

The one I downloaded works, it still shows on my desktop that this copy is not authentic, but it works fine. So i'm not bothering

DailyTech - Microsoft Opens Vista SP1 RC Refresh to the Public

Quote:
All legal Windows Vista users can now try out the SP1 RC Refresh

Last week, Microsoft released the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate Refresh to 15,000 beta testers. In an effort to get even more feedback from customers, the SP1 RC Refresh is now open to the general public.

Microsoft routinely offers up test software to the general public, so this move shouldn't come as a surprise. In early December, Microsoft provided Vista users with the initial release candidate version of SP1.

As reported in previous articles, Windows Vista SP1 brings new anti-piracy measures, faster file copying, improved networked performance, enhancements to ReadyBoost and support for hotpatching.

Microsoft provides the following cautionary notes for those that wish to install this latest update to Windows Vista:
  • Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh is pre-release software and will change before the final release. Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh is for individuals, organizations, and technical enthusiasts who are comfortable evaluating pre-release software and is provided for testing purposes only. Microsoft does not recommend installing this software on primary or mission critical systems. Microsoft recommends that you have a backup of your data prior to installing any pre-release software.
  • Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh is time-limited software.
  • Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh will no longer operate after June 30, 2008 and should be uninstalled prior to that date. After installation your desktop will show the text "Evaluation Copy". This does not mean that your system is no longer genuine but that you have installed a test version of software which is time-limited. The "Evaluation Copy" text will appear on your desktop after the second reboot after installing the service pack. Likewise, the "Evaluation Copy" text will remain on your desktop during the first reboot after uninstall the service pack, but will disappear after the next reboot.
  • If you install Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh it is strongly recommended that you install the final version of Windows Vista SP1 when it is released. To do this, you will be required to uninstall this RC version of Windows Vista SP1.
  • Assisted support (phone, email and online chat) is not available from Microsoft Help and Support for this RC release of Windows Vista SP1. Self-help and peer support is available through the Windows Vista SP1 forum.
  • You must have a genuine copy of Windows Vista installed prior to installing Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh.
For those that don't mind dabbling with test software, the Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate Refresh can be obtained directly from Microsoft.

My home PC has a genuine copy Vista (upgrade - if that's has any importance), but for some reason, SP1 RC kept telling me I needed to buy a new product key. So I uninstalled it.
