If you have a "free" via school, then of course go for it. I mean, OpenOffice is just as good and it's free, but it's really up to you and personal preference.

Yes, and I love it. Takes a little to get used to the ribbons though. It is a very nice suite of applications.

As far as I know OpenOffice is not yet compatible with the native 2007 document format if that is what you are looking for.

Unless it's a corporate product key with multiple licenses it's okay. That's what we have here. We just buy more licenses if needed.

My company is too cheap to purchase additional Office 2003 licenses. I love it when code doesn't work on certain people's computer, then come to realize they have 2000.

Nope, just two single-user licenses to go around for everyone.

When I first started at this company about 9 years ago ( Damn, I've been here that long ), I believe they got caught with MS Office and had to pay out over $100k

I use open office on ubuntu linux and there is a plugin that lets open office open docx files. I do not know if there is one available for Windows as I don't use it that much anymore.

The main problem that I see is that all of the features that are available in Word do not carry over when opened in Open Office. One such feature is the adding review comments in the margin.

only problem ive noticed so far is the fact that you cant easily transport files from 03 to 07. instead of the standard .xls file.....its now .xlsx

so for our office, we currently upgraded 3 of the main computers to 07 and plan on upgrading the rest within a few months.

You could just save it as the older 2003 format in 2007 so that files made in 2007 are compatible in 2003. There is also another way to change what format 2007 saves in as default.
