Network Problem

Okay guys, I am officially stumped on this and need some help.

I am currently running my Motorola Cable Modem through a Linksys wireless router and then into my Dell XPS Studio desktop. I randomely drop my connection and it's becoming really annoying.

I had Comcast come out, but they said that there weren't any problems with my line. I upgraded the firmware on my router and checked to make sure the firmware on the cable modem are up to date. I changed out my network cable from my router to desktop and still seem to be having issues.

I formatted back to XP Pro because I thought maybe Vista 64bit was causing an issue, but since I had the latest drivers installed for my onboard intel gigabit lan with both systems, I am still having issues.

My desktop is only a few months old. Should I hit up Bestbuy and get a new network card and see if that fixes it? It's the last option I can think of before sending this back to Dell for repairs. Anyone else got ideas?

I suggest you bypass the router for now and watch to see if your connection continues to drop. I've replaced several bad linksys routers at work over the last couple years with the same symptoms.

Well I forgot to add that my wife connects with her laptop all the time without issues. I don't seem to have any connection issues with my iPod touch so I was thinking it wasn't the router

linksys routers have tendency to drop the internet connection.

flash it with DD-WRT helps a little.
if you are using BT, port forward it.
disable uPNP on the router & BT.

Is your wife's laptop wireless? (I know your ipod touch is). If that were the case, you wouldn't rule out the router necessarily, because the issue may be with the physical ethernet ports on the router. It could also be a hidden advanced configuration item on your LAN card (QOS Settings, etc) that's causing the issue.

If that's the case, it can't be the modem or router. I would suggest another NIC.

I would assume if he's having problems wired, he would tried his wife's laptop with the wire as well.

You assumed wrong Didn't even think of doing that since her laptop works fine on the wireless end.

I am gonna flash to DD-WRT and then try to see if hers will stay connected with a wired connection. If so, then must be something with mine. If not, then I can replace the router. Funny part, this is the 2nd router from Linksys. My first one they replaced because when I was renting a house, the house line was hit by lightning and fried the router. They decided to replace free

If you are having problems with your connection dropping or losing data packets 90% of the time it is a router problem.

like sunnyD said, it could be your NIC as well.

did this just started happening, or have been going on all the while?

Before you waste your money on another NIC... If not already done so check on the back of your system. If you have two lights ( one blinking green and one steady amber colored light) your NIC isn't bad. That is if you are using a regular CAT5 ethernet cable. If it is fiber connector cables there should be two green lights. If you have no lights try a physical connection with the same cable on another system in the house. That should determine if you need a new cable or NIC. Any questions just pm me. I troubleshoot computers 11 hours out of the day.

bullpoop, ive seen network cards with all the lights on and no one home. ive seen network cards with all the lights looking like they were working and the card dropping 90% of packets it got. if the same computer is doing the same thing across 2 OS's AND other computers on the network all work fine your problem is narrowed down to the physical router, the cable, the computers nic. if possible try changing the port you are plugged into on the router, if YOUR comp still acts funny and youve changed the cable. my bet is the nic.
