Verizon Free Tethering

Good news VZW 4G customers!

Quote:
Verizon Wireless is no longer allowed to block apps that allow people to use their 4G LTE smartphones as Wi-Fi hotspots. And the carrier will pay the Federal Communications Commission a $1.25 million fine, the government agency said Tuesday....

t's unclear if customers with an unlimited data plan will be forced to give up that data plan if they use a tethering app.

Yay. I've installed FoxFi on my Razr Maxx. Haven't had the need for a Wifi hotspot since I got the phone, but have for all of my previous Blackberries. Never know when I may need it.

I've been doing some research on my next phone, Samsung Galaxy S III, and it looks like the Verizon version is both blocked from doing tethering and no SIM card slot. But the Sprint version does both.

Why did Verizon do that?

EDIT: Nevermind. It looks like it's a different version Galaxy S III handset - http://www.phonearena.com/phones/com...ones/7114,6330 <-- But according to this website, the Verizon phone has a SIM slot.

Is the SIM slot on the Verizon S3 locked or can I use any SIM in it when I go overseas (I know Verizon is CDMA, so in the US it doesn't care about the SIM)?

Thanks! Right now I think I have to look hard on which carrier I would go with.

How do you like it? Lives up to the hype?

It's crazy fast. I like the screen. It's your typical high end android device. Some of the 'hype-y' features I've turned off, like i-sight, which keeps the screen on if you're looking at it. It works, but it really affects battery life. I went back and forth between keeping it and not only because of the size. It's HUGE. It's not a problem in my pocket because it is so slim, but I can barely get my thumb to the far side of the screen when holding it with one hand. I've come to terms with that though and I'm hanging on to it (no pun intended).

Doh! Sprint covered the SIM slot with plastic so you can't get to it and they're not going to enable GSM roaming. Oh well...

Well, if you're traveling overseas, I don't think you'll care about Verizon's 4G network considering they're not available overseas

Sorry to hijack this thread. Can you separate the GSIII posts and make a new thread?
