Got a PS3 today...
Read last night that it can run Ubuntu and decided it would be a good weekend project. Currently the file copy is at 81%. Can't wait to see how this goes.
The TV I am running it on is an HDTV but has no HDMI port. Right now I am hooked up with a Component cable. The TV I am using have has a DVI input and a VGA input. What would be the best way to hook it up? I have 4 HDTV's and none have an HDMI. Talk about bad timing with my purchases, lol. ![]() As for games, most of the games I am excited about aren't out yet. I picked up Tiger Woods 07 and Ridge Racer V. Madden 08 will be next. |

I didnt buy any of the Hi Def cables tonight but I am sure it will look good as is! |

The acoustic research cables at best buy are good and are reasonably priced in case you dont want to wait for an online order.
And a place called RAM makes good cables; Custom Cables and Wire Harness Manufacturing Like TE said, whatever you do, dont waste $100+ on Monster cables like a fool. As long as the connectors dont fall off then its high quality when it comes to digital cabling. |

I am headed off to BB to get an HDMI to DVI converter... or cable... or something.
I have read mixed reports online on the ability to use the HDMI and AV Multiport on the PS3 at the same time. Since the DVI won't do anything with the audio, I need to get the sound out to the RCA's on my TV. We shall see what I find! Ubuntu is running fine, but it doesn't pick up the wireless card in the PS3. That really sucks, as my setup is nowhere near my switch. There is another build that someone did that apparently detects the wireless. I am going to reformat and give that a go. Reports are mixed but it can't hurt to try (the whole project is useless to me without wireless). Linky: psubuntu.com | Ubuntu on a Playstation 3 » Blog Archive » Custom compiled kernel |

It seems to be a highly recommended site in some online AVS forums. At least it was the last time I searched. |

Get a regular HDMI cable from Monoprice. Then include a HDMI->DVI adapter. Allows you to reuse the cable when you get a TV that has HDMI later on. Plus Monoprice have extremely reasonable pricing onthe cables. One thing to be careful though, for some reason I can't get the PS3 on DVI to display when plugged into a projector at work. The projector does support 1080p natively too. Don't know why and never figured it out. Just FYI.
There's tutorials on installing Ubuntu on PS3. It used to be you need to use a flash drive to put otheros.bld on the drive to install, but with firmware 1.90, that is included, so you just put the CD in, go in to XMB, select install otherOS and voila it installs. Yellowdog seems to install with the least amount of effort though.

Ok, got my HDMI cable and adapter. Went to Best Buy so I am sure I payed way over but whatever, at least I will get some reward zone points.
I had Ubuntu installed but it didn't run so hot. Problems with networking (both wired and wireless) and display modes. Right now I am hooked up to my 65 inch HD projection screen running Yellow Dog and everything is working fine. I want to be hooked up to one of my 22 inch Philips LCD's, but when I put the adapter on the end of the HDMI cable it doesn't fit. The base of the monitor gets in the way. I have to get a DVI gender-bender so I can hook up a regular DVI cable to the monitor, then the HDMI-DVI adapter. Headed off to try to find one in a bit. |

Picked up a 60gb PS3 today due to the $150 credit available with a sonystyle card. Brought the purchase price done to $387 after tax. This thing will be pretty much worthless to me until early next year when the blockbusters come out unless I set it up to play some old ps2 games
