My name is Michael, and i'm tired of being fat.

Ok, so. I was reading through Wally's thread and it has entirely inspired me to get back to exercising. Here is a brief history of my life.
Played Baseball for about 8 years, I was probably in the best condition ever that entire time. From about 5 until 13 I was lean and conditioned. Then I quit. I would probably call that the biggest mistake of my life. I gained some weight in middle school. Then a little more in high school. Now I have never been like, FAT, but I have always been heavy. I can look pretty good in a normal t-shirt, i would say only because I tend to carry weight pretty good, but I refuse to take my shirt off to swim or anything, which has lead to a severe lack of swimming (which I also regret and miss a TON)

Then senior year in high school I took a conditioning class. I lost enough weight to still have some pudge, but shirts fell very nicely on me, and I was able to wear parts from years past once again. I felt really good. Then high school ended. I stayed around 215 at 6 feet tall for about another year while I was in college. Then it went downhill again.

I got a job at the hospital and went from a 10 minute paid break to a half hour unpaid lunch. And there was a full cafeteria, not just the food around me(I managed taco bell before this). I think I didn't gain too much weight working fast food just because I didn't eat a ton, but I snacked all day on small things keeping my metabolism up, and didn't really eat when not at work. Well, having a cafeteria open 24 hours I gained about 35 pounds in less than 4 months. IT WAS TERRIBLE. I was at 248 and had always told myself I would never EVER hit 250 pounds. Well, one day the scale read 250 and I had had it.

Since then I am down to 236-238. My goal is to be BELOW 200 pounds by new years. It doesn't seem too unreasonable given that I usually lose about 10 pounds right away then it tapers off pretty quick.

I work nights so I am getting a membership to a 24 hour fitness next week and plan to exercise after work 5 nights a week. i have been using fitday.com to track my eating which actually was a HUGE factor in me losing the 12 pounds recently. Aside from that I really don't have an exercise plan yet but I will be doing TONS of reading in this forum to figure out what works.

Thanks to anyone who read this. I will be updating often with progress reports and anything else I deem relavent.

I would like to fist say Congrats!! I am glad to hear you took action when you hit your max at 250, and you have done great so far to get into the 230's. You say you want to get to 200lb by years end and that is a GREAT goal cause it is a goal that wont be easy but it can be acheived. After you have done some reading in the diet threads (basically to learn about what foods to eat and at what time) post up, then when you read through the workout threads also post up. We are all here to help.

Glad to hear you're making a commitment to drop some fat! You are on the right track with the food tracking on fitday. One thing I will caution you about - do not drop calories too fast or too low. slowly reduce calories and try to increase energy expenditure without dropping calories too low as your first course of action.

If you lift heavy weights 3x per week, keep your diet clean and add in some cardio on off days, you should see good steady progress. The more muscle you have/keep, the easier it is to burn off fat.

Take measurements and pictures to track your progress. Don't rely on just the scale.

Feel free to PM me or post up with any questions.

As a guy with a few more pounds than I'd like to have, I'd like to chime in.

I have recently lost 19 pounds(over the last 2 months or so) by mountain biking. I would HIGHLY recommend giving it a shot. I'm so addicted to it now and I definatly think I'll reach my fitness goals because of it. It's a great way to get cardio and it's DAMN ADDICTIVE(which is always a good thing if it's something healthy). If you get hooked like I have, you'll get in better shape, meet some GREAT people, feel better about yourself, and relieve A LOT of stress. I shelled out a little over $400 for the bike and haven't looked back.

Obviously it's not the only way to get in shape by any means, but it's a load of fun and with gas prices, you can make your rides useful (like wearing a backpack and riding to the grocery store). If you want to consider it, there's a forum called Mountain bike product reviews forums classifieds trails with a section called "Begginners corner". That's where I started and Rshank(member on these forums) is a BIG help with all things biking. Hope this helps, just sharing what has helped me.

Good luck! You've taken the right steps so far!

I'd like to just wish you luck on sticking with your choice. I myself have dropped 30 pounds in the last ~6 months. Things are much better in almost all regards. This summer doesn't feel as hot and miserable as summers past have. My blood pressure is back to normal (it was borderline high). All in all, I just feel better.

If you need any tips or motivation I am sure most everyone that frequents this part of the forum will try to help.

Best of luck to you, man. Speaking from personal experience it's not going to be easy to lose 40+ Lbs, but it is possible if you commit to it and don't give up.

same with me, I weighted 205 the begining of Jan 2008 and by March i was down to 180 just from doing a lot of road bike riding. I was training for road racing so I was doing a lot of long distance rides and sprint training. Road biking is not nearly as fun as mountain biking, but it is a lot easier to do because you don't have to drive to the trails. But get a good bike and ride it a lot. it's good fun and easy to lose weight

There is nothing magical that will completly ease up the pain by tomorrow, but you should look into an l-glutamine supplement as it will help with recovery and soreness. You can just take glutamine alone or you can find a nice whey protein product with glutamine and other added goodies like essential amino acids that your body doesn't produce on it's own. I'm currently using optimum nutrition whey protein which has added glutamine and soreness hasn't been a big issue for me. Just make sure your diet is in check also.

Yeah. It's been so long since I've actually "worked out" worked out that I totally failed and got all thirsty and chugged some water about halfway through. Needless to say i was pretty useless for about the last 20 minutes.

It's gonna be tough to get back into a routine but I plan to get serious about being healthy this time. All my family is really helping out now, like no more fast food for dinner and cutting back on the fried stuff. I think it's the little things like that are gonna help. And as of today I am 2 weeks without a Pepsi I do miss them though

Congrats man. I've lost 40 lbs since January 08, it feels really good. I hope you stick to it. I've been using fitday for the last couple days and the thing is great. Like said above try not to drop calories to fast. For cardio, I've been doing HIIT at the track. I stepped up the intensity yesterday pretty good, I almost puked. You should do some research on the Guerilla Cardio Workout or HIIT two very good cardio exercises. I'm doing some research on HST weightlifting program also looks like a pretty good program. It primarily focuses on compound lift and little bit of isolation lifts. Good Luck man.

Good Luck on getting to where you want to be, another great site to check out is TESTOSTERONE NATION | The World's Fastest Growing Nation of Bodybuilding and Strength Training Enthusiasts

I started the velocity diet, and have went from 244 down to 217 currently and I'm only on my 6th week of the diet (still have 1 more week to go). It'll kick your ass, and you'll have to have alot of willpower but its been worth every second of it. I can finally start seeing my abs again for the 1st time since college!
