Time to test my dedication!
Well here it goes!
Currently, i'm 20 (21 in march) and a would not say i am overweight or anything. I do a stomach though - and a fully blame that on my late-night, pre bedtime eating habits, and my huge consumption of sodas/sugars. I am a college student/full time worker - so hours of the day are limited, and so is the resources around me. I am 160lbs - and honestly, i know i won't grow much more. I am built pretty small for a guy of my age. It's in my genetics. I do have a bit of arm and leg muscle(from MANY younger years of biking, and labor intensive jobs i had.) But my main focus with working out is to ditch the unhealthy eating habits, loose the caffine gut, and gain a glimpse of abs in the process. Loose about 10lbs/gain them back with muscle. I just want a nice tone to my body i suppose. And a healthier lifestyle! I am doing some reading, and will start my routine at the beginning of Feb. I figured i will start off by doing some simple walk/jog/run routines. I work overnight, and take night classes, so all of my routines will either be taking place in the EARLY morning/midnight range, or around noon after i get off from work. The rest of the prime workout times are dedicated to my class/work. I am doing my research as we speak (yes the stickys and search button), but any advice, or just kind words are appreciated. Before i start my routine, i will log the weight, and take pictures for myself. Hope i will see some small results in a matter of a month or so!

I already see a bunch of excuses coming out. Need to get rid of those if you really want to start up and stay dedicated...
I was a college student too. At one point i was taking 12 hrs FSU, working 30hrs a week, and taking classes at the Real Estate School. I could have made excuses about having to eat out, not having time to exercise, etc...You have to get over that stuff. Youre in school, you work...why not set your body up to work at its optimum level by eating right and exercising. Also you said you want to wait till Fed...why wait? You said you want to start slowly in getting in the flow. Why not start slow starting monday and really get into it on Feb 1st?? From what is sounds like you have a pretty fast metabolism considering youre only 160lbs..then again idk how tall you are. I honestly believe if you change your eating habits to healthier foods...and start strength training for 30mins with 15 mins cardio after you could have a complete change within just a few months. |

Thanks for the advice cam!
Yea, i do realize i was throwing a few excuses in there, but the weren't thrown in there to be an excuse. I said that to see if i needed to change any of my plans due to me having a weird schedule - not to make an excuse to not work out. Monday is the 1st! And i am waiting till Monday because i realize if a make a goal ahead of time, i am always dedicated enough to do it, rather than say "i'll start tomorrow" - when tomorrow never comes .As for my height - I am 5'9 - 5'10. Depends on the time of day.

Ive just got the go big or go home mentality. Obviously dont go in the gym and kill yourself trying to lift 400lbs. But if you dont push yourself and challenge yourself from the start youre only going to get bored and drop the entire program. Also with only 10lbs to lose i wouldnt work at dropping the scale down 10 lbs to then turn around and try and build it up 10lbs with muscle. Why not kill 2 birds with one stone. Every extra amount of muscle you gain will only aid in burning through fat. You can work at resculpting your body through weight training and a little cardio.

I keep preaching about Power 90 and P90X, only because they worked and are working for me. Going from 311lbs with no muscle and not able to do even half a push up down to 217lbs with a bit of muscle and able to do 30 push ups and on the verge of doing pull ups only after 1 and a half rounds of Power 90 and eating right really makes you want to share the information. lol Any exercise you can fit in sounds good though, it's all heading in the right direction. Power 90 is only a 30ish minute exercise, you might be able to work that in and you can do it in the privacy of your house/room which is a good part about it, as well as you don't need a ton of equipment to do the workouts either. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the continued advice! My biggest fear is that i will be able to get enough sleep during this whole process. From my understanding, sleep is where you will build the muscle to replace the fat.
I am already sleep deprived - i just fear i won't get enough sleep to justify the work put into it. But hey, there is only one way to find out, right?

![]() But you will adjust...everyone is different. I cruise by with 6 hours of sleep. Even on the weekends i will pass out at 2-3am and wake up at 9 without worries. I am used to not needing that much. Plus as you start eating better and building your body up you will find yourself with more energy in the day and you will sleep much better at night. |

Well here is how my schedule goes...
I get up at 3:30am (for work) and get home about 2:00pm. Sleep from 2:30pm - 6:30pm. Head to class from 7:00pm - 1:00am. From 1:30am - 3:30 am i can usually grab an extra hour of sleep, and cram a session of workout into that time-frame.

Best thing I can tell you to do is, stop buying bad things to eat. Resist random trips to fast food places. Read the nutrition facts on the labels.Go grocery shopping and buy HEALTH things to eat. Buy a water purifier and keep refilling a water bottle. You would be surprised what cutting out cokes will do for you. I used to go through a 12 pack a day of Dr.Pepper, and look back at how damn stupid I was. Now i've been coke free for about 9 months. And don't switch to sprite thinking that it is better for you. It might not have caffeine, but still has plenty of sugar. You are crunched for time so buying already make salads in a bag would a great thing for you. If you have any other health food questions just text me or IM me.
Your work schedule scares me, how little sleep you get... You might want to look into something different. You can do this for awhile but its going to catch up with you. As far as working out I have 100x different work out exercise websites. Let me tell you there is nothing better than feeling healthy. |

So, i been running for a couple nights now, with some bench pressing, push ups, and sit ups tied into it as well. Truth be told, i am sore as hell and don't want to add more pain to the equation... BUT I MUST!
![]() I will continue my work-out every weekday, and resting on weekend. Is this a good plan? Or do you think i should add a day of rest somewhere in the week and continue work outs on the weekend.?

Eh, I understand where you are coming from but a protein shake or two won't turn you into a roid monkey.. Takes much, much more effort than that to to anything more than "tone up". It will mostly help your diet, particularly when you think you aren't getting enough protein.

5'9" 160 i would be looking to add muscle more than tone up, that height and weight is fairly thin to begin with. I would focused on adding muscle first, cut later. You already missed out on the "bulk" winter season but better late than never.

haha im 20 also..21 this june. 5'9" and 155 wanting to get back in shape as well
I used to play basketball back in highschool and i was in shape! after graduating i got a job and have not worked out at all ever since! work has helped me to gain 'some' muscle but still not what i desire for myself. Actly i have lost over 10pounds but thats cuz i dont get hungry that often and also its been over 8 months since i stopped drinking sodas and other carbonated drinks. I used to drink a 44oz dr. pepper every day but now its down to straight water and iced tea. thats just to stay healthier since im not working out. this summer i will hit up a gym or buy the Bow Flex and set it up in my room has anyone bought the bow flex?? is it really that great????

I'd say workout Monday-Saturday. Take Sunday off. Lift heavy, all or nothing. Don't deprive yourself of food. Eat "good" food. It's ok to have cheat meals every now and then. good luck.

its hard with your schedule....just think of little things u do that can give u a work out. like instead of driving to your mail box at your apartment....walk. during school walk up the stairs instead of the elevator. find every opportunity to just do...Something.

Thanks for all the advice. I think my body is finally adjusting to the new routines. I can now run twice as far as a could without even breathing to hard now. It seems like i can run longer as well. I will keep pushing myself further and further with every other couple days for rest.

Fuji apples and cantaluope are the sweetest fruits that I find are readlily availiable. When you have a craving for a soda or candy, a sweet juicy fruit will cure that. Eat legumes! Almonds are awesome, after them come walnuts...just my taste though...

So I've been reading a bunch of health threads lately and looking other stuff up, and believe me I will continue to do so, but I still need help. I'm pretty much in the same boat as a few of you: 19, gained weight I'm not used to, have a shitty schedule and diets, and I want a change. However, before I keep posting here because I didn't want to waste a new thread, should I make my own thread since I'll have tons of questions and a diet and workout regime needs to be more individual?
