My first 9mm toy!
After many months of comparing guns I decided on a S&W M&P Compact in 9mm.
![]() ![]() My CWP is on its way... but in the mean time I'm going to the range. That's all. I just wanted to share.

Thanks. Actually the PX4 Storm is one of the other guns I was seriously considering. But I decided I wanted something small enough to conceal. I just picked it up Wednesday and haven't had a chance to take it for a spin. But that's my plan for tomorrow. :-)

How do you think the M&P will hold up to larger hands? Any serious pinch points that you've noticed?
I have the M&P 40 and love the way it feels and shoots and have considered picking up the Compact 9mm as a daily carry. Any news on if they are going to come out with the compact 45? I haven't followed it for a few years so I wasn't sure if they were still going to or not. |

The MP looks like it has the little extension on the mag. Beretta does makea sub compact version of the PX4 and it has a little extension that flips down for a pinky rest.
Def give us range report. I'm meeting up with a co worker who buying my Glock and we are meeting at the range so I will probably run a few rounds through the PX for the first time there. |

I love the 92FS and I was very close to waiting for the new 92A1 to come out which includes an accessory rail. But I decided to just go for the PX which I really like as well.
As for shooting, it performed fantastic today. I did take me about 20 rounds to get used to the sites and the hold (my hands are a tin bit large for it) but after that I able to put 10 rounds in a group of 3-4 inches at 15 yards. many of the shots going through the same hole. |

I finally got in some range time with my new M&P today. I put about 150 rounds through it and managed to keep 4-5 inch groupings at about 15 yards. I shot a little low and to the right the whole time, but I'm sure that can be fixed with practice.
I had one jam from the Walmart Winchesters that I had to field strip the gun to clear. The casing actually had a dent in it which explains why it didn't feed correctly. Otherwise it took everything else I threw at it. The gun had little recoil but I noticed my groupings were better with the pinky extension mag versus the flat one. Overall I'm very happy with the first run. There will be many more to come

Natchez Shooters Supplies ordered it on Monday evening and the ammo was on the door step Friday evening. I bought 50 rounds of .357 mag and 270 rounds of 9mm (20 of those being the more expensive personal proection hollowpoints) for $148 shipped. The two boxes of Speer lawman for example were $13.98 for 50 rounds each. I have used Midwayusa as well before but they are out of stock on everything. |

I have Smith M&P .40, Glock model 27 .40, springfield xd, .40 and an ar-15 i built that is chambered for 5.56/.223, and have shot hundreds of others, and I personally love my glock, the M&P has the best grip ever, and the springfield xd is just as solid as they come. I'm not big on baretta they seem a bit heavy, but i do like CZ p01 or 75D, they are bit heavier but thats to be expected from a pistol that is machined (no stamped parts whatsoever). But good choice on your purchase.

Nice. But does your service weapon include the thumb safety? I would think that's a hazard for a LEO. I know most have holsters with thumb breaks and other safety features but I've never seen a service weapon with a manual safety.

Also we are taught in 1 motion to flick the safety off while we are drawing our weapon, hard to explain but thats the training we get, as opposed to normal LEO's they do it in a 2 step process, the draw first, then take the safety off, with us, it's all in 1 motion. Quote:
Very much so! as i said, i like the standard issued sig 229's but the HK is a better feel for the hand... i HATE glocks. |

most of the LEO down here use glocks. little hard to train them to take the safty off first, second, or third on those.
oh, and that was part of a TV show as well. that safty line....I've never seen that movie and I've heard it before. |

I just picked one of these up yesterday. D&L is big here in Rhode Island and somebody had passed away and left their family with over 200 handguns. They sold them cheap and I scored. I paid 299.99 plus tax. Came out to 320. This isn't mine, I have 7 more days to wait before I can pick it up
. I can't go into the gun stores anymore, I HAVE to get something if the money is in the bank. It's sad... somewhat ![]() It's a STAR brand Firestar M-45. Star has been out of business for YEARS and they're not too common to come by. This one has never been fired, still in the factory box with the manual and the original mag. I'm pretty souped. Here's what it looks like

That .38 Pepto looks way to much like a toy.
You best make her understand that she won't be able to draw that as a threat. But it may be just the thing to take down a charging Chiwawa. |

Also, I've never been to an indoor that wouldn't let you shoot normal FMJ's. They always ask to inspect your ammo before you go into the range, but they have never had an issue with WWB. The only thing they wouldn't allow was AP rounds, but then again, I'm not going to be shooting paper with those.

Ranges have different rules.
Some don't allow the FMJ because they will typically penetrate more (wont mushroom out like a hollowpoint or soft point) so if they have a "soft" backdrop behind the targets then they want a bullet that won't go through. There's also a range here in Deerfield that makes you shoot only their ammo and of course they rape you on the price. The INDOOR range I shoot at is the only one in the tri county area that will evenlet me shoot my 500. All the other indoor ranges won't allow it (or anything over a .45, which would include the .44 mag). But they make you shoot only frangible (sp) ammo if you're shooting .22 caliber ammo like the .223 .220... As for the grips, yes they come with interchangeable backstraps...it's not the entire grip, just the back portion. And to be honest, I tried putting the other two on the gun and they didn't feel any different. ![]() As for the .40 vs the 9mm, it depends on what you plan to do with the gun. If you're shooting paper I can tell you that the 9mm will be cheaper to shoot, but at least in my area, the 9mm will also be next to impossible to find ammo. BassPro Shops has literally CASES of .40 S&W ammo but zero 9mm. I've had to order mine online. |
