Thanks guys. I'm hoping to have it on the ground Friday so I can start heat cycling it and hopefully drive on Saturday. It's going to take one helluva sprint to make this happen but if I go hard again tonight I think it's possible.

Photobucket was down last night...
![]() I tapped my boost control vacuum source through the brake booster line. ![]() The only thing you have to be aware of is the check valve that comes built into the factory hose. YOU MUST RETAIN THIS VALVE IN ANY CASE or you will have no brakes unless you are idling at vacuum and boost will kill them. My check valve is still in the hose further down. I clamped each joint because these are the last lines in the car I want to come loose. ![]() Manual boost controller. ![]() I am aware of it's rather home made nature. It also doesn't bother me because I've seen this exact controller on a number of other boosted cars in the area with nothing but positive reviews. I couldn't fit much more under here but Josh had a good idea and said it might be a good place for the catch can since it really doesn't fit under the hood now. ![]() The blow off valve is recirced to the draw through piping, now I just need that piping. ![]() The nice thing about the 3g is the lower radiator hose is very long and has 2 90* bends in it so for 9$ it's perfect for a recirc line. Also welded in the IAT bungs, going to clean that pipe up today along with the rest and then bring them back for installation. Got the heat shields bent, just need to modify the bracket a tad and put those in with the intercooler piping. Boost gauge vac line has been run but I still need to run those IAT wires before I put the pod in for the final time. Once all this is done it's just the intake pipe and I'm golden. |

How many people do you know that do this?
![]() Tapered inlet/outlet and buffed though on EVERY SINGLE pipe in my entire air track. Every last one. Only a few lines in this one elbow I didn't have the patience to wait for. Since they're inline with flow it won't matter anyway. ![]() Sanded all of them on the outside as well, then painted. ![]() Nice Krylon high temp stuff. I've had incredibly good results with it so it should look alright. Tomorrow I'm putting in the heat shield, finishing the gauges completely, pinning back the wiring harness and hopefully cutting the intake pipe. Any last odds and ends will happen Saturday morning. |

Probably not Matt, I've got one job and one job only and I am doing nothing else until it's finished.
Gauge wire up is 100% complete now. ![]() ![]() Also tacked down the battery for the final time. Terminals not hooked up for obvious reasons. ![]() Cleaned the car out on the inside and brought the shop vac over for a thorough vacuuming inside and under the hood. I'll wash it between heat cycles. I've got one thing left: the draw through pipe. That consists of two cuts and welding in two fittings; one for the BOV recirc and one for the catch can which will then be hooked up for the final time. |

You would not believe the night I have had and it is a testament to exactly how whigged out I am that I am still awake enough that posting here seems even remotely close to what I should really be doing.
13 hours in the garage today, and she finally came out. ![]() Done. Complete. Finished. Unbelievably so, the car dropped an inch in the front and an inch and a half in the back and stiffened up substancially so I won't need to get coils or springs or anything. This make me incredibly happy, tires and a BBK and I am done with it. End pictures, but an unbelievable story. Built myself a basemap and flashed it. Got the car running and had to fix one leaky vac line at the MBC. Otherwise, no oil leaks at all. After heat cycling it a couple times Ben, Connor and I piled in and went to get some fresh gas. AFR's looked really good, a bit rich but that's what I wanted. Timing was set conservatively enough that it wouldn't play a factor in knock. At about 3200 rpms the signature whistle of the Holset HX40 Pro begins to sing. With a full tank of fresh gas I finally, FINALLY got on the thing. 3500rpms and the wastegate opens for 3.5psi of boost and the tires are just gone. Shift to second, same exact story. 3500 rpms, 3.5psi and the tires are gone. Third gear, 80mph comes with a haste I have not known in very many cars. Drove the car around for a couple hours; cruising and having some fun. Went to Sears to meet up with a bunch of people and Ben convinced me to turn up the boost since the ROM was set to hit 5.5 pounds. We got back on the road to move to a new meeting spot, a good place to test out the higher boost level as well. As we got out onto the open road I opened it up. 4.5 psi hit WAY harder then 3.5 did. The car steps through the gears with an incredible level of authority. We went down past the meeting spot and turned around to come back. I decided then was a good time to go through a few gears again. Halfway through one of them, the car bucked really hard and decided it was done for the night. I managed to limp it down the hill to our parking lot where we ended up waiting 3 hours for a tow truck. Believe it or not, the boom cleared my exhaust short of a mild rub. What happened? Blown MAF. 4.5 PSI pegged it and it gave up the ghost. The car will not run with anything except idle, the very instant I so much as well the gas pedal down the thing dies. IAC works great, idle fluctuates big time on start up, all cylinders are firing and fuel pressure is normal. Reflashed the ROM and it didn't change a thing along with resetting the battery. TPS is reading regularly too, leaving the MAF as the only culprit. It makes sense as well, when I found out my 501 was full of oil it was doing crazy things to idle and partial throttle as well. So it's been an up and down night. With a suspension of nothing but urethane bushings now and Addco sway bars from and back I can say I don't think I've ever driven a car I liked the handling of so much. It's unbelievably tight and by this I mean that it has an immaculate ride quality while taking corners with unnerving agility, it feels like a little sports car. It's quiet and well mannered, idles normally (when the MAF isn't fried) but when I hit boost it roars like nothing I've ever driven before. Nothing melted or overheated, no odd smells or leaks. All in all, it couldn't have turned out better aside from the electrical issues. I'm going to buy another MAF tomorrow and see what happenes. The only remaining mods now are a Baer BBK and a pair of Nitto NT01's. |

It had it moments.. but sucks what happened in the end. It doesn't sound like a major setback though. I hope you get her back up and running again.
What happened to the Brembos? What springs are you on? |

The car will drive with a bad MAF. Hell you could unplug it and drive. I would pull your plugs first. I cant see you maxing out the MAF at 4psi. I was blowing 8psi through the maf and as well as suck thru. This was all on the 501 MAF which reads less airflow. Theres also members up here with GTS MAF doing the same.
So what is your timing set at when you hit boost? What codes popped up because if it was bad MAF a whole bunch on codes would pop up. Baro, iat, etc |

4.5 psi on this motor with this turbo is akin to 8-10 on the 3 liter with something small. Chances are, you were maxing out your MAF but it didn't blow because it was healthy. And if you weren't, then I don't know because mine is about pegged so says Evoscan. The 482 I got was out of an 01 Montero and had clearly been sitting on the junkyard shelf for a long time because it literally looked like it had been dropped into a mud puddle. But I'm not sure, because I pulled it off and it looks fine, at least the element does.
Alright, round one of trouble shooting completed. 1) Checked the plugs front and back. All look fantastic, pistons do too. All had gas on them from starting it a moment before pulling the plugs. Compression on the front cylinders is 180psi across the board but the O ring on my tester ripped so I couldn't test the back. 2) Vac lines are all tight. I have none really to be loose. 3) The intake is solid, no blown couplers or anything like that. It's all sealed up with no leaks. 4) Only blown fuse in the car is the fog light fuse and I don't even have fog lights anymore. 5) I pulled the MAF and it looks fine though I didn't pull the circuit panel. I pulled the plug and tried to start the car and it won't idle period. It'll rev to 1200 before cutting out immediately; no IAC compensation or anything. So here is what happens with everything hooked up, I start the car and it starts normally. Then the idle drops way down, then jumps way back up, then down again, then way back up again. It does this until I so much as touch the gas. If I touch the gas the RPM's drop and it nearly stalls, if I give it any substantial gas it does stall. If it recovers from me giving it gas the idle will settle around 850rpms and the exhaust smells like it is running very rich. The idle fluctuates with AFR. When it almost stalls the wideband pegs lean but when it idles back up the AFR's get down into the twelves and it oscillates between. I don't have an EGR to be opening up and shutting down, and it's not a vacuum problem because everything is perfectly sealed up. That said, it has to be electrical. One weird thing is Evoscan won't connect to it now. I can't get a log read out on anything. If it weren't for this trait I'd be sure it's the MAF but this makes me wonder if it is ECU related. So how advanced are you running this ROM in means of being conservative?

It ran fantastically for 2.5 hours with unbelievably good AFR's (For a basemap anyway). I've reflashed that ROM and everything and it makes no difference.
It cut out half way through fourth gear, even though I can't find the log I know the MAF was pegged if not very close as it was at 1500 hz on 3.5 pounds and load was between 150 and 160. Cody, I was running 15 degrees of timing at 7000 rpms and AFR's were in the 10's in boost. |

2.9.0019. I'm stilling figuring out how to work it, I try to pull the DTC's and it tells me to select the computer type or whatever but fails to provide me options to make a choice what so ever.

What all should be selected in the top left? OBDII 96+? MitsMUTIII? It's been on the MUTIII simply because the options showed up for me like they did in the last version of Evoscan I used that my stupid computer deleted.

Already have. The whole entire system is 100% sealed. No leaks in the intake track, no vacuum leaks.
I am recirculated so if the BOV was leaking it wouldn't matter anyway because it only gets metered air. |

So I'm 99% certain I have it all nailed down now. I went over to the garage and pulled out my old 501. It was full of oil and ran the car like crap before but Chad told me he's cleaned his out a million times and so I used a 1/3 can of CRC on it and blew it out with a fan.
I then went and put the cleaned 501 on the car, didn't change anything with the ROM or anything else. Just plug and play. Started it, revved up a tad to 2000 rpm's and the idle slowly began descending just like it was supposed to. Responded to throttle, never died, drove the car and everything. I pull back into the driveway. Disconnect the battery just long enough to switch the MAF's and try to start it again. It falls right on it's face, can't idle or take any throttle. I stop again and put the 501 back in and it drives just fine again. Put the 482 in again and once again it falls on its face. I'm going to the yard tomorrow to pick up another 482 and we're going to give it a shot! |

wait did you rescale your MAF scalings on the 482 when you ran it because that will cause another issue as well. I couldnt get my car to idle with the evo MAF till i grab the scaling off a evo rom

Unbelievably, it was a blown intake coupler. It was the one coming off my BOV pipe, invisible in the dark and bypassed by my boost leak test because I only have a 3" tester. Lesson learned, very glad it was an easy fix though.
