Behold The Pale Horse

This is my 2001 RS-Turbo. I wasn’t going to make this thread until the car was finished to where I want it but if that is to be the case then I would never be ready. So nevertheless, here she is. I bought it back in early 2010 with 82k on the clock. I have always wanted a third gen Eclipse since they came out when I was ten years old, but after getting one I was disappointed in the “performance” of the stock machine. Now I’m stuck playing this modding game. Here is how she sits now, and instead of making build threads in the very near future, I plan to document and chronicle everything in this Member’s Ride thread.

Thanks Christian. I wish "I R boost" though.

And I know haha. I have been telling myself to make a MR thread but never had the balls. Too many 3Gs that are so much sicker than mine. But oh well

Thanks man! That is one thing I would like to touch up though. The valve cover and caps were all engine enameled black shortly after I purchased the car, and the heat cycling of doing pulls for tuning really aged the adhesion fast, so some of it is starting to chip or flake off. Same with the VHT on my exhaust manifold and O2 housing.

I figured it was way past time .

You definitely have an idea, but you haven't a hint at the scale of the build.

Tav nothing gets by you, does it? Haha you spotted the turbo setup without even looking down into the engine bay from the picture on Facebook. Yes I changed it after and the flanged adapter pipe is raw metal in color. I didn't have time to paint it just wanted rid of the RFL so I threw it on there. It doesn't look pretty but it's much more mannered between shifts now.

haha i pay attention to details on peoples build especially FI builds. Nice choice on the tial bov. I have one as well but i had to convert to the qr and recirculate it because it was opening and closing at random on my sds. I tried so many springs to come to the conclusion that it needed to recirculated for a supercharger set up with that special supercharger spring

Yeah I'm actually have somewhat of a similar issue with mine. I bought it with the -11PSI spring and my engine pulled it open like nobody's business so my car wouldn't even idle. I put a washer in there to shim it and then it started surging like a mofo and wouldn't vent below 10PSI of boost. Then I bought the -12PSI spring (for $35 I might add -_-) and it wouldn't vent at all.

So I sent that back and ordered a -10PSI spring which I'm going to try shimming. Ironically though, in the meantime I put the -11PSI spring and shim back in and it now vents around 4-5PSI.

Yea i think i have almost every spring trying to figure that bov out. Ill convert back to VTA if i go speed density maybe. The only thing that sucks about VTA with the -3psi spring its fully open at idle and cruise. You already know how loud the bov is when it opens. So imagine hearing that 24/7. It does turn heads though haha

Im going have to look into those prosport gauges.

I love the gauges, though I do have some complaints and for that reason if I were to ever remove them I would probably end up replacing them. I love the fact that it has a digital display as well as an analog bar, and that they do the Pontiac sweep when you start the car...

HOWEVER,

they are too advanced for their own good. Instead of making them just regular display, they are plasma/LCD and so I have to move my head down to view my water temperature gauge at the bottom of the triple pillar. And also due to their make, they all three appear to be a different shade of blue - despite them being exact. It's like looking at a computer screen at an angle, it changes the color/distorts the contrast. Sucks. But they look neat if viewed correctly haha.

I'm also in the process of converting to the 3Gb front bumper. I'm getting another intercooler though and I'm not quite set on it yet, so I have to choose that first. Since these parts are silver, I'd rather measure twice, cut once and paint once. I also have GT side skirts and new fenders. If you look closely you can see little dents in my fenders where my lambo doors hit them. Since removing the lambo doors I tried to straighten them out but I just creased them a bit further so I let them alone.

Looks good man, this has been a long time coming. You've obviously put a tremendous amount of work on the turbo and it really shows. I'm glad you are starting to focus on the exterior. Can't wait until this is all finished!

I love my prosport gauges. They work and look great.

I can't believe you guys are having issues with your blow off valves still. You shouldn't need a spring rated for PSI unless you're having a lot of pressure drop between the blow off valve location and your vacuum tap. I've got the Greddy RS with the single spring mod (very flimsy spring), opens at 2 psi let off and stays shut all the way up to 20 pounds at least.

Thanks bro! That means a lot. Your 3G is one of my favorites on here.

The Tial Q BOV springs are rated for negative PSI, which is referring to engine vacuum, not actual boost pressure. They should have rated them based upon mmHg but they didn't, though most places you buy from (STM, ExtremePSI, etc.) already have them converted for you. Still though, I refer to them by their proper names given to them by Tial.

I WILL get it figured out. It's just been slapping me across the face for a while.

worst case scenario you can buy the lower recirculation piece and recirculate it. extremepsi have them. Its still pretty damn audible recirculated

Yeah I've heard it being recirculated into a 4" aluminum intake on my buddy's 1G DSM and it was honestly just as loud as mine is currently. Though mine isn't opening correctly. I want mine to sound like this:

I'm tapped off a vacuum manifold which is tapped off the brake booster line. Vacuum source is solid, it's just a matter of finding the correct spring combination that works best.

Vacuum manifolds are shotty as heck. They don't react very quickly to vacuum changes.

Well the excitement is becoming too overwhelming so I figured I would post up a little bit of what I have been working on lately. Considered this more of a hint rather than an actual explanation of what I'm doing.

I got the idea to take a stroll through my local yard and I found this beauty:

Notice something missing? That's because I took it with me. Not a single drop of oil or coolant on the entire engine. $89 for the engine and about $50 worth of gas for the banana boat

That's all the further I've gotten with the physical engine itself as I had to leave it three hours North at my parent's house due to time constraints and prior conflicts of time. That said, I have lots of stuff needing a home.

Manley Turbo Tuff I-Beam 156mm Long Rods holding up forged Manley Chromoly-Skirted 87mm 9.3:1 CR pistons with the HD wrist pin upgrade.

Tying the bottom end together with these:

Somebody robbed the harmonic balancer and accompanying bolt off the engine before I got to it so I threw that ARP harmonic balancer bolt in my order of main studs as well.

Moving on, let's take a look at how this bottom end is going to breathe:

Built Evo VIII cylinder head featuring GSC Beehive Valve Springs with titanium seats and retainers. Still planning on running the OEM Evo VIII hydraulic lifters and rocker arms. Full gasket matched intake and exhaust ports:

To continue the easy inhalation/exhalation, I traded out a set of HKS 264 camshafts I had lying around for a set of HKS 272 camshafts:

Then I had Justin (Silvertune) go to work on my intake manifold and throttle body.

Pre-porting:

Post-porting:

Then he ported and rebuilt my Evo VIII throttle body with MIL.SPEC shaft seals:

Picked these up shortly beforehand:

Finally to the snail. I wish I had known a little more about the variations of the Evo 16G turbos before purchasing mine. As it turns out I purchased the 2003 Evo VIII 16G with the 9.8 hotside and it is really pale in comparison to the later Evo 16Gs. That said I made it right by picking up an Evo IX 16G6C 10.5T. The hotside was full gasket matched my MAPerformance. Don't mind the little 13T from a bugeye WRX below it. I just set it there to show a size comparison.

However I wanted to maximize the use of this turbo so I purchased an FP Flow Advancement Port compressor cover. This is essentially an FP Green cover (.020" throughout the charge curl) without the use of the 20G compressor wheel.

FP cover on the right, OEM cover on the left:

All done:

He did a hell of a job. I love that every entry/exit to the intake/exhaust is gasket matched. I need to get a roll on and get the block separated so I can have it machined. I couldn't hold in the excitement anymore lol.

Matt knows what he's doing. Most of the guys at MAP do.

It would appear you're dang close in all areas. I'll be interested to see how long you can hold out from this thing. Once you start you won't be able to stop!

Thanks Ryan, those I beams are seriously badass. Like...I can't even explain to you how beefy these things are. They're so beefy you actually have to shave off .060" of the block on both sides near the balance shaft channels to make clearance for them. They're pretty much twice the thickness of the OEM rods and about 7/8 the weight.

That's the plan. As stated before this is just a hint though. I've been ironing out a lot of stuff with another individual to ensure that this is a kickass build.

You know me so well, Justin! I caught the sickness pretty hard with this one. The last build I just wanted to finish. Now I can't wait to get started.

On a side note, I met up with a friend for lunch yesterday and it was so nice out we decided to take some pictures. I'm pretty upset about not noticing what the graffiti said behind my car before taking the pictures as I got some really cool shots. I'm no good with Photoshop so I don't know how to get rid of it. #firstworldproblems

It was gorgeous out this weekend so I decided to wash the whips.

Or I should say that the 3G got washed, waxed, and interior vacuumed and Armor All'd while the S10 got sprayed down .

I took a trip up to my parent's house to see what I could get into with the engine and I was quite happy with my findings. The Galant I pulled the engine from had no serious body damage and there was a haunting in the back of my mind that perhaps the reason the vehicle was sentenced to a lifetime at the junk yard was due to an engine failure. Pulling back the timing covers exposed a like new OEM Mitsubishi timing belt and aftermarket rollers/tensioners. The water pump was also aftermarket which made me happy at that moment that someone had at least changed the timing belt once since it was manufactured in 2000. There are some things missing on the engine such as a crank trigger disc, the balance shaft crank pulley (spacer for the crank trigger disc), balance shaft tensioner pulley (couldn't care less about this though it provides a mounting and fastening point for the front case so I will need the bolt at the very least), the timing belt crank gear, the hydraulic auto tensioner and the harmonic balancer. All very minor stuff. Removing the head revealed cylinder walls with cross hatching still visible. Unfortunately I ran out of time and didn't get to go beneath the oil pan but as of right now I'm expecting everything to be solid. Here's some pictures:

Miscelllaneous bracketry:

Anyone need or want a perfect condition cylinder head?

And that's all the further I got with the engine. Unfortunately I again planned very poorly with having to gather some personal belonging's from my parent's house to take with me back down to my apartment in Shippensburg, so I had to leave the engine up there AGAIN.

It's difficult working in the garage back home as there isn't much room at all

Can't wait to finally bring it down here next week and start the machining business.

And on a closing note, I went for a ride in this beast over the weekend too:

Powered by a Holset HX40 at 25PSI and I have to say it absolutely breaks necks. I truly envy the power this thing makes and so for that reason I may be working an HX40 into my plans somehow.

25 psi is peanuts on a DSM with an HX40.

That's a brand new short block so he's retuning. He was pushing 40PSI on his stocker with only main and head studs and it let go not a month ago. He found a built short block 45mins away and picked it up a day later so we were just doing some short runs with it. I'll tell you what though, I am truly jealous of the tenacity and ferocity that thing had. No wheel spin just grip, rip, and break necks. I can't wait to feel that pull thing once he's back up to where he was.

Well yesterday was a busy day. Spent all morning running around town trying to find a place that had long enough M10x1.25 bolts to mount the block to the engine stand. Most people that stocked Hillman hardware stopped at something like M10x1.25x45 which was still way too short. Anyways, finally found a place and got her mounted up:

Realized she was filthy so I then ran back out to get some degreaser.

Then I turned her over and zipped off the oil pan and behold, the cleanliness:

Then I went to work getting her all disassembled.

Dat shine

Stock slug and rod:

Now look at these. Please tell me you feel comfortable pushing the stock block when you see this

All done:

I left the crankshaft and the main girdle in place to keep them safe as I was unable to book a sooner time than June 3rd at the machine shop. But bet your ass I'm going to be more than ready!

And finally did some more searching around and found a few images of where I need to notch my block to clear my beast of rods.

That's all I have for now. She's all done waiting for the machine shop appointment. There I will be having her cylinders bored .020" over to bring me to an 87mm bore (my pistons are 87mm, they will be in hand), cylinders honed, main studs cranked to 60ftlb and the mains line honed, the crankshaft will be micropolished and further balanced.

If it wasn't clear from the getgo as I don't believe anybody else on here has built a long rod setup, the purpose of my 2.4LR is to be a high revving engine. Our crankshafts aren't perfectly balanced from the factory which is quite evident in the 6k redline. Hell the new V8s on the market have a redline of 7000RPM and above. A long rod setup increases the rod to stroke ratio to make higher revving safer as it reduces the angle placed upon the wrist pin. This is why further crankshaft balancing is required in order to safely rev higher. Though the stock bottom end certainly isn't the only limitation in our stock long blocks.

Here's another NOGAF update.

Got some more goodies in the mail:

And Black Cat finished my stock replica gauge cluster with elevated tachometer and redline. I'll probably take mine out to 9000 RPM so long as the power doesn't fall off before then. However, I thought it would be silly to have a single red bar for the redline, so I asked it be taken out to 10,000 RPM and have the redline start at 8. For daily driving I barely ever see over 5000 anyways. I sent my 3Gb gauge faces to them so they could measure the trim ring and get all the dimensions down pat, so once they give me the final confirmation that the finished product fits the silver trim piece, I'll be paying them and receiving it a couple days later. For now, here is a CGI of the piece. Looks awesome, they did a great job:

I like that cluster face. How much are you paying for that? If it looks stock, I'd definitely be interested in getting one as well, preferably redline at 7500 though

It was $120 for the designing of the face. Our stocker goes to 8, unless you mean leaving 6-7 white instead of the redline starting at 6000 (6500 for you).

Had more time to sit and really look over a high res copy of my gauge cluster and realized some issues between the stocker and the stock replica. First of all, not sure if Mitsubishi even noticed this, but there was two different fonts used in the 3Gb cluster. The main instrument panel featured more round and curvy lettering while the fuel level and water temp gauges retained the straight 3Ga style font. I had Blackcat ensure the font was the same throughout the cluster. Also had them add the factory black outline around the tachometer numbers.

That finished, I should have the final product in a week or so when they make it come to life.

I was chatting with a buddy of mine in the Evo world and he just finished assembling his built 4G64 and is ready to drop it in the car. It was the swift kick in the ass I needed to finally fully undress my block to get it ready for the machine shop appointment that is just a week away!

Removed all the freeze plugs I could using the "eyelid method". Don't have a drill down here to get the remaining two out that butt up against the cylinder sleeve.

And did the balance shaft delete in my new oil pump:

I pressed in the rear shaft freeze plug and JB-Welded the ever-loving piss out of it:

Mirage "stubby" shaft installed in the driven gear:

Anddd didn't have a vice handy so I tried to torque the stubby shaft by holding it with pliers in one hand and the torque wrench in the other and I think my torque wrench is out of whack so I need to get it recalibrated. This is how it will stay, I removed the bolt so the loctite didn't have time to dry.

And got rid of the old pump and balance shaft business. Still left the crankshaft and mains intact in the block. Waiting to go to the store and use an entire roll of bubble wrap around the crankshaft and find a suitable sized box for it.

Finishing up eating some Hot Pockets right now then I'm gonna go play with my cylinder head and look for any touch ups or revisions I can make to get it all prepped up.
