And for glue, I use the 3M spray glue at WalMart that is $10. Here is a picture I found on the internet of it...

About making a mess, we did the first few times too. You just have to aim the glue more carefully and be sure to remember where it is so your fabric doesn't touch it.

I do have one quick question for you...
feedback first- I built my box myself and used black felt and spray on adheasive. the problem with this is its a complete pain in the ass to clean and I constantly have keep redoing it. also, I need to recover the box anyway becuase my wife wanted to be a part of my stereo build and she never wrapped a box before. She cutout each side and glued it on so now all the edges are starting to peel from the vibrations. What would you recommend in black ( keeping with the interior color) and what kind of adheasive should I use?
