What do y'all think of the 968?

So I'm a little bit bored. My GTI is my daily driver and I'm just looking to get a toy. I don't really have a budget in mind or anything, but I'm looking for a car that appealed to me when I was an adolescent. Obviously, there were a number of supercars that I loved at the time, and that ain't gonna happen right now, but some other attainable ones could. We're talking timeframe from around 1988-1995 or so for my sweet spot here. I've been looking at 300ZXs, RX-7s R2 and 3, 944s, and now most recently, the 968. I found a beautiful 968 that ends tomorrow:

Porsche : 968 6-SPEED MANU Porsche : 968 6-SPEED MANU | eBay

Buy it now has it for 16k and the car flat out looks perfect. We're talking the Risky Business car here. Only 1200 of this model year sold in the US. Pretty rare... What else might I be missing in my time capsule? You can leave out pretty much anything domestic- I'm just not interested.

I haven't seen the movie in years, but I am pretty sure it is actually the 928 featured in Risky Biz- (great flick btw!).

I remember reading about Jay Leno hearing about the car getting sent to the crusher and he hired some detectives to find it. I'm not sure that is true, as I found this after a quick google:

Tom Cruise’s 1979 Porsche 928 Fetches at $49,000 “There Is No Substitute” – Risky Business Dedeporsches Blog

I think Leno's goal was to save the 928 that actually was sunk into the lake as part of filming...

You're absolutely right - It was a 928S - couldn't have been the 968 due to years, but same body style anyhow.

As far as rarity/collectiblity goes, I think the 968 is tops for the front engine porsches. That said, I prefer the 944 and 928's styling. The 928 is more of a GT car, but tons more power, though the weight ratio and model variants obviously make a big difference. If you want something you can track and really build out to your own spec, the 944 would be the way to go, but then again, the 944 has pretty much zero value as far as collect-ability goes.

It really depends on what you are looking to do with it. To keep the car original and drive it a few days a month, it seems to me that the 928 meets your nostalgia and super car criteria better than the other 2-3 options.

Honestly, the only one I'd consider is a Mazda RX-7. The FD3S design is timeless and it's the only 90s Japanese sports car I'd consider iconic.

Kabob - I agree. It's a gorgeous car. I'd like to know some more about reliability/common problems/etc, if anyone has any experience. I grew up with an RX-7 or two in my driveway - my live in uncle was always tearing them apart (SAFB), but that FD3S is another animal entirely...

Believe it or not, I almost bought a 944 Turbo instead of my z06. I love the styling of those cars and the one I was looking at was so freakin' clean and tastefully modded that I just fell in love with it. But, the dude decided not to sell it right at the very end.

Maybe I am a bit vain, but I think there is some amount of prestige in owning an older Porsche sports car. I would definitely pick up one of those over a 300zx or rotary powered RX-7's.

You should remove all the emissions equipment and go with a high flow catalytic converter or straight pipe. Any back pressure and heat just destroys the rotaries. Upgrade those apex seals so you don't get blow-by. Stay on top of fluid changes, upgrade the intercoolers if you can. Keep it unrestricted and from getting too hot and you should be good with the rotary. Or heck, find one with an engine swap; that'll work, too.

I believe the 944 was also known as one of THE best handling cars, was it not?

I wouldn't really say its vain to feel that way necessarily. Especially if we're talking about a nearly immaculate example of an older Porsche. There is an older 911 that runs around town here during the summer, and while you know that plenty of modern sports cars would handily wax it, its still something to appreciate.

I do love RX-7's as well, don't get me wrong. However I could see where used RX-7's would probably have a higher probability of being ram-rodded. One day I'll hopefully manage to pick something up like these myself. Just something about pure driving dynamics without all the electrical assists and other things that can get in the way.

Yeah...it was basically a race car that they turned into a street car. More often than not we see the opposite.

Idk, there's a shitload of 944's floating around here. Over the RX7 and Porsche though I'd take a 280z. Something about them just hits the spot for me. I love em
