Porsche GT1 to emerge as Veyron-slayer

Dubbed the GT1, the uber exotic will produce 950 bhp and hit a top speed of 254 mph, a couple clicks over the Veyron's best effort of 252 mph.

The GT1 could be view as a replacement to the recently cancelled Carrera GT, as it will use a modified version of that car's carbon fiber chassis but be skinned with a different body and feature a closed cockpit. The GT1's prodigious amount of power could be produced by either a modified version of the Carrera GT's V10 or a turbocharged version of the Cayenne's V8 with a larger displacement.

PistonHeads reports that Bugatti is already working on a faster Veyron, so Porsche better step on it before Bugatti moves the target.

I wonder exactly how stable these cars are/feel at 250+ mph. Does anyone else think the "top speed" competition is a little retarded?

A decade or two ago, 200mph was a golden benchmark for cars like Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, and the Jaguar XJ220, but I think making cars that are capable of well over that mark is a little rediculous. Another 10 years from now, there will probably a car with a top speed over 300mph. And for what exactly?

This radical supercar is expected to be dubbed GT1, and will be a 950hp, road-legal version of Porsche’s future Le Mans challenger. According to insiders, the target top speed is 254mph — a crucial 2mph faster than the claimed top speed of the 987hp Bugatti Veyron.

The core of the new car is the Carrera GT’s carbon fiber chassis, fitted with modified nose and tail structures. The interior is also based closely on the Carrera’s distinctive dashboard and center console.

Autocar’s exclusive illustration is drawn entirely from leaked official technical drawings of the car. Sources have also revealed that full-bore 950hp engines are under test, as well as work on weight distribution and aerodynamics, both of which will differ from the competition versions of the car.

One thing that’s not clear at this stage is how the massive slug of power will be delivered. One suggestion is that it would have to come from a turbocharged version of the Carrera GT’s V10 engine. However, other motorsport sources say it will be powered by an enlarged, twin-turbo, 5.5-liter version of the Cayenne’s V8.

In fact, Porsche is already racing a 600hp, normally aspirated V8 engine in the American Le Mans series with the Penske-prepared RS Spyder, and it’s expected to be adopted by Porsche’s own European Le Mans racer. However, Le Mans racers will switch to the closed-coupe format from 2010.

Actually the top spped race hasn't been raised much in many years as the Callaway Corvette "Sledgehammer" topped the 250mph mark (254.76mph) back in 1988. Over the last 15 years Ferrari, Lambo and many others have been happy to build cars that top out in the 180-190 range and I have always thought that top speed has been forgotten about until recently.

Owning a Viper myself, I am not a Corvette fan BTW but that Callaway car was awesome at 880hp in 1988 !!!

That car was a one-off. The speed record is for production vehicles only.

it's called aerodynamics. at that speed with the design those cars have they could probably drive on the ceiling with all that downforce.

considering the population on this planet isn't getting any thinner, yes. but it's not going to end just because 95% of the people sit in traffic going 5mph most of their lives.
