HOW TO: Install a AUTO METER Oil Pressure Gauge

How To: Install a AUTO METER Oil Pressure Gauge
Process of INSTALLING a AUTO METER Oil Pressure Gauge (Electric)

ITEMS NEEDED:
-Oil Pressure Gauge
-Continuity Tester
-Jumper Wire (atleast 12' of and gauge wire)
-Open-End Wrenches (Standard & Metric)
-Philips Screw Driver
-Wire Cutters
-Wire stripper
-Crimping tool
-Elecrtical Tape (roll or liquid) or Heat Shrink
-Soldering Gun, Solder, and flux
-Teflon Tape or "Gimme The Green Stuff" Pipe Dope
- Auto Meter Adaptor #2269
- 90 degree Elbow 1/4" Male and 1/4" Female (Oil fitting)

PROCEDURE:

Step 1.
DISCONNECT BATTERY (You may be able to do this install with the battery hooked up but, it is better to be safe than sorry!!)

Step 2.
Go under your car and look for the oil filter. Now, above
the filter is the Sending Unit for the Dummy Light that is in your dash. REMOVE that Sending Unit, you will not need it anymore.

Step 3.
Grab your Sending unit that came with the O.P. gauge. Now the thread will not match (the Auto Meter S.U.'s threads fit a Domestic vehicle). You have to order a METRIC ADAPTOR from SUMMIT (AUTOMETER Part #2269)

Step 4.
When you get your adaptor, you are going to have a
problem...The Sending Unit will not fit. It will bump the return
line from the A.C. . Now, this is NO PROBLEM. Go to your local Auto Parts store and get a 90 degree elbow, with 1/4 male end and 1/4 female end (tell them you are running oil through it).

Step 5.
PUT IT TOGETHER. The Adaptor goes into the male end of the elbow then screw the Sending Unit into the female end. Then screw it into the female opening above the Oil Filter. (do the steps which ever you can to make you connections tight and so they clear) ***Make Sure You Cover Your Threads with either Pipe Dope or Teflon Tape to asure you Have NO LEAKS!!!.

Step 6.
The wire that was connected to the Dummy Light sending
unit...you can still use it. DO NOT CUT THE END OFF. Go get a male
connector (Like what is on the end of a speaker terminal) and extend a wire to your sending unit.

Step 7.
Now is the time to put your electrical skills to the test. The Factory Sending Unit wire is hooked up to a Dummy Light in your gauge cluster. We will be eliminating that light so you can use the wire for your new gauge. Pull off your Gauge Pod and undo you Gauge Cluster. You will see 3 connectors on the rear of the Gauge Pod that make your gauges work. Unplug the Middle Connector. Now take your Continuity Tester and Your Jumper wire, hook one end of the jumper wire to the end connector that cliped into the Factory Sending Unit. Now take the other end of the Jumper wire and hook it to the tester using the testers clip. You should have the pointed end to use to find your wire. Poke the Tester into each of the openings till the bulb lights up. That Is Your Wire!!!

Step 8.
Now, just cut the wire away from the connector (leave enough wire comming out of the connector, incase you ever have to hook it up again). Solder your wire that goes to you Oil Pressure gauge to the wire you just sniped. Your Finished with the gauge cluster, you can put it back together and mount your Oil Pressure gauge

Step 9.
Go Back under you car to finish up the install. Screw the one end of the wire to the NEW Sending Unit and Plug the connector into the factory connection. You should now be ready to hook back up your battery and start your car.

Step 10.
Start Your Car. You should see the gauge move up to about 75 psi (if your car is cold).

Well that is all there is to it. If you have any problems, questions, or anything else I can add, You can email me a the_iceman99turbo@yahoo.com . Enjoy your Oil Pressure gauge

KrazyEd : who are you?
here is some new info from FlashBlueRS

"i have also done the install. instead of using the autometer adapter, you can get an adapter from autozone. autozone carries sunpro gauges and accesories. they have a kit with adapters, a kit with brass lines and compression fittings for remote mounting, and a kit for t-ing the factory sending unit with the autometer sending unit. if you want you can update the how-to with this so people dont have to wait for an adapter to come in the mail."

The sending unit is not inthe same spot for the 4G64 as it is for the v6, right?

I was looking in my manual and the sending unit is on the back of the block for the 4G64.

Please confirm if this is correct.

Thanks
Correct... The Sending Unit for the 3.0L V6 is above the Oil Filter on the front/center of the motor. The Sending Unit for the 4G64 is on the rear of the block, Left side when standing infront of the car.

As I quoted...this is what the finished product should look like..
