freeman88 : who are you?
power steering is gone...please help!

I drive a 2002 gs 5 spd. I was on the freeway and when i got off the exit, i noticed that the wheel was much harder to turn than normal. so i pulled over and saw that one of the underdrive belts was completely off from its pulley, but from what i can tell the only affect is the loss of my power steering. the car is difficult to turn at low speeds, but i finished driving home.

how hard is this to fix?
is there anything else i should worry about or check?
is the car safe to drive?

and can someone post a diagram of the underdrive belts and pulleys for my car, i havent been able to find one.

thanks

I worked on my friends car and we took his belt off to replace the alternator but when we went to put it back on we found the tensioner, pulled on it to release the tension and put the belt back on. It was rather simple but it was on a pontiac so i dont know if it would be similar. So its prolly not hard to fix, your alternator is probably not being run either so expect to see a dead battery soon if you keep driving, also the a/c prolly wont work either (accessories, p/s, a/c belt), car is prolly safe to drive but steering is gonna be tough and like i said the battery is gonna die quick. I wouldnt drive unless it is a must.

the belt just snapped, and i have no idea why. from what i can see, the belt goes to my power steering unit and some other unit...perhaps my a/c...? or maybe my water pump...? my alternator belt is fine.

if its attached to the water pump then definitely dont drive. When was the last time the belt got replaced. it could have just been old and worn

00TampablueGS is missing this belt as well. It only runs the AC and P/S. So its not going to damage your car just make it more difficult to drive.
