Drewski's 16g build, a long term process
If you looked at my ride thread (Drewski's '03 Black GS) at all, you would know that I have been collecting parts for an Evo VIII build for almost a year now. It started with a great deal on a stock header manifold, Evo 8 16g turbo, Megan Racing o2 housing and J pipe, most of which I won't be useing, but it has lead to this.
I've been reading and am still reading as much info on the subject as possible. I am by no means an expert at this but i have learned a lot. I am turning my car into a huge project but plan on spending a lot of time reading and Researching and collecting parts before I do the various builds I have planned, starting with my manual trans swap hopefully coming around August. This forum has been a huge help and through it I have made some friends to help guide me along and I am getting to know the right people to ask the right questions. Tons of thanks to the following: Jared529, Finesse49ers, Masta560, Yahh, Chaveseclipse, Newdie, Silvertune, Osirisfool, isaurio and everyone who has helped me or provided the info used Finally here are up-to-date pics of my 16g build parts: ![]() I will be using the Megan header, with the 10.5 Evo 9 hotside on the left and the no shaft play, already ground compressor on the right, Megan o2 housing and 2 1/2" spacers ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next ![]() Evo 8/9 Injen solid pipe kit with OEM J-pipe, OEM intercooler couplers and a Greddy Type-RS BOV ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next ![]() OEM Evo 8 intercooler ![]() OEM 6g72 Throttle Body ![]() OEM GS fuel pump basket assembly, OEM Evo 8/9 wire harness clips, Evo 8 560 cc injectors, Walboro 255 fuel pump and DSM injector resistor pack ![]() ![]() ![]() Next ![]() OEM Evo 8 fuel rail and FPR ![]() 40" SS 4AN to m12x1.25 banjo oil feed, 17" 10AN oil return (will be cut shorter), and 2 10" 6AN nipple fittings to m14x1.5 banjo bolt water lines ![]() ![]() Next ![]() ![]() OEM 4G64 oil pan with a welded on 10AN oil return fitting ![]() Evo 8/9 GrimmSpeed EBCS with OEM Evo pigtail to be connected to the ECU for ECU controlled boost and Omni Bar 4 MAP sensor ![]() ![]() 05 Evo 8 GSR ECU p/n 1860a118 ![]() 3 Evo 8 4g63 header gaskets, header to hotside gasket, o2 housing gasket, compressor to j-pipe gasket and oil return gasket, all OEM My current goal is to get 300WHP with a manual trans (to be swapped in place of my auto) and my current 4g64 rebuilt. I am looking at the 4g63 head swap and that may be a possibility way down the road. And even further down I plan on a 2G GSX/Evo AWD swap (Yes I have huge pipe dreams) Transmission Swap Parts List ![]() I4 Manual trans with under 40k miles and a Quaiffe LSD with under 8k on it (3k with this trans). Rust is minimal and yes it is grimy but nothing a bit of engine degreaser won't fix. Am contemplating a fresh coat of high heat silver before I install it. ![]() OEM Flywheel and ACT Street Disk Clutch with 3k miles ![]() Brake and Clutch pedals with pigtails and OEM manual trans mount (will have a prothane insert when the time comes) ![]() Clutch fluid resivior, clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder and all fluid lines (I plan on using redline clutch fluid) ![]() ![]() Shifter base with Megan Racing Short Shifter and ES Shifter Base Bushings, and Shifter cables with Speed Source brass shifter bushings Not pictured are the Evo 8 ECU to be reflashed with Tephra's or TX4Codeman's 2003+ Manual I4 ROM and the manual 03+ guage cluster Thanks for any and all feedback Last edited by Drewski0523; 07/13/2012 at 12:16 AM. |

The pump that has the offset inlet is the 341. so your good there.
even though your not doing the swap until next year I'd suggest test fitting as much as possible whenever you get some downtime. It's pain having to order something like a coupler and waiting on it when your ready to throw it on. Or realizing that something just isn't going to work like you planned. That's one ugly turbo

The little tube on the j-pipe is where the wastegate hose goes for boost reference the intake fittings are for bov and crankcase vent most likely.

Yup I went on last night and checked the price of all gaskets, stock water lines, j pipe, heat shields and intercooler couplers. I think I'm buying used lol. New gaskets and j pipe though. Thanks again for the link

It was sent in a huge box, unwrapped or protected, with the intercooler, fuel rail and injectors.
Here's the whole story: http://www.club3g.com/forum/good-guy...clipsegst.html Thanks for the compliment man. |

Didnt post these last night, but after the incident that happened with the shipping of my IC that many of you know about, I found some dents. Are these going to cause a problem?

The dents in the tanks won't cause a problem unless they develop cracks. Any bent fins are just a loss of efficiency. I'd do a boost leak test on the intercooler before using it at least. They're common and easy to replace cheap if its not on the car yet.

Decided to put parts collecting on hold till after the holidays/my re-enlistment bonus gets in. Decided I have more than enough time and a nice Christmas for my family was more important.
Yea, this thread is going to be my build diary and this is subject to change if I come across a deal to good to let pass.

I'm most likely selling the current AEM wideband I have to someone else who wants to deal with it, and getting another. I've read a lot on and seen a few discussions on the difference between the AEM Wideband and the Innovate Motorsports LC-1 and still would like to know more before I make a descision. Does anyone have any fact as to why which one is better than the other? Fact over opinion. I'm going with ECU controlled boost if that will make a difference.
Thanks for the input guys. I like the features of both and feel they are more or less the same, and am leaning toward the LC-1 just because it will match my other 2 and I can find it cheaper. Last edited by Drewski0523; 11/03/2011 at 10:26 PM. |

Go with which ever is cheaper or if your paying a tuner go with what they're most comfortable with. They're both accurate the AEM has a prettier gauge and slightly simpler install, but doesn't come with logging software like LOGworks. All your logging will most likely be done with evoscan so doesn't really matter. Innovate reputation is on the decline but I haven't had any problems with mine.
Would take about a half hour to wire it up and see if it was working properly. Seems like a bigger hassle to sell it and buy another when it could be fine. My LC-1 survived a fire and about 30 gallons of water and it was powered up the whole time. I'm sure AEM is just as durable.

LC-1 is a bit quicker and more accurate, AEM is easier to install and you seem to hear less problems with AEM. The problems with the LC-1 are usually installer problems from people who can't seem to follow directions
I'm sticking with my LC-1

That's what I figured Greg and you would go with. Just figured I would ask.
Marc, I like the look and styling of the LC-1, but the ease of use and customer support of AEM. Plus I've seen the work Greg can do with the AEM on chavezeclipse's 6g74 N/A tune. I'm just going to stick with the AEM, but I would love see the difference between the 2 on the same car with the same tune . . . Last edited by Drewski0523; 11/04/2011 at 12:48 PM. |

This is true. In actuality they are both great gauges and you can't go wrong with either but AEM is tried and true and from what I've seen of these newer widebands they haven't separated/distanced themselves from AEM to the point where anyone can say that hands down the others are better.

I'll be lurking, chiming in whenever I can. I noticed you have Evo VIII resistor pack on the parts list... I thought Evo VIII injectors were high impedance?
If that's the case, you won't need a resistor pack nor will the Evo come with one ![]()

Although a lot of people use them without any problems, $57 guarantees it's a fake. A limited edition hks that has been discontinued forever on ebay in mass quantities and even comes with mounting flange lol, quite a few red flags there. Sucks HKS USA is forced out of business due to everything they make being flooded by knock offs.
