Somewhat irrelevant but the OEM boost solenoid is not adjustable from my understanding. It is a level set in the ecu by the factory. Aftermarket boost controllers can be set with ecuFlash to give a different boost level at different RPM ranges. That's why a lot of the Evo guys switch to them. The GrimmSpeed model that I will be useing has a harness that plugs into where the OEM controller did. I actually boughtthat harness so i wont have to hack up the boost controller and to give it a slightly more OEM look. For us to use it we will have to add 1 pin to the c-49 harness at the ecu. In my thinking that's not too bad of a thing to have to do for truly adjustable and customizable boost control.

Hahaha that's what I'm worried about, but I'll have to fight the urge. Aren't our blocks only good enough for about 18-20PSI without building the internals? Yikes, I would hate to ride that fine line.

I haven't posted any pics up, but the car is pretty much done with the exception of me waiting on some clamps and the exhaust work...which I am not looking forward to.
Here is how I used an angled spacer without snapping or bending the head studs: ![]() Here's looking down onto the beast. Note that my friend and I had to cut the furthest two head studs because they hit the manifold and didn't allow it to be tightened down. I had 10mm added onto the stock length studs, so that's why. I could have kept all the upper head studs stock, but they're not stainless ![]() ![]() And this is a mock-up of what it will look like once it's all done. Minus the intake tube, I don't know why I didn't put that on yet.

Appreciated bud! That empty threaded hole on the right side of the manifold will be filled with my EGT probe soon. I think I'm going to wait to do all the electronics once the exhaust work is done.

No way, the wideband bung is welded into my downpipe. The Zeitronix ZT2 comes with the EGT probe for an extra $40 if you buy the kit so I figured what the hell and bought it.
LOL I just thought of the fact of that brings my total gauges to: Wideband AFR, wideband lambda, EGT, boost, oil pressure, oil temperature, water temperature, and voltage. |

A lot of it depends on the tune. On this turbo people have gone as high as 23-24 psi on stock blocks. Its just a matter of how you treat the car and how much you get on it and actually see max boost.

So just to post an update the car is done, STILL waiting to get into the exhaust shop. Today I had to drive two hours to the closest junk yard that even has 3Gs so that I could rob some OEM exhaust hangers. Apparently the dickhead who owned the car before me just took them off and threw them away, as my Magnaflow exhaust muffler piece was just welded to the frame
.I hate fixing shit like this. However, I did change my setup around and once it's all done Andrew will be tuning it. I'll be sure to post up some vids.

Haven't updated this in a while. I got sick of waiting on friends who promised me I could use their car trailer to get the car to the exhaust shop to be finished. So I said screw it and went to U-Haul to get a car dolly. Unfortunately the car wouldn't fit on the dolly without ripping off the front bumper and intercooler piping. I also had to take a die-grinder to the bolt bosses on the bottom of the intercooler. Not a big deal but it took like 2 hours just to get the damn car onto the dolly
![]() ![]() Hooked it up to the Mountaineer and away we went, special thanks to my brother for allowing me to use the SUV. ![]() Also since I changed my setup around a bit so it was suck-through, I had to use intercooler adapter pipes. One or two was fine but I needed a 12" section which would have been four of those little adapters, which would look like hell, not to mention increase the chance for boost leaks. So I bought a straight 12" piece of aluminum piping. Only problem it didn't have beads on the ends. I remembered seeing a thread over on DSMTuners about making a bead roller. An elegantly simple design lol. I bought a shitty pair of Vise-Grips from Big Lots and a $2 exhaust clamp from Surplus City and gave the pieces to my mom's boyfriend to be welded. Check it out: ![]() It's just Vise-Grips, an exhaust clamp bottom and a 3/4" washer. Works AWESOME. However, it's a shit ton of work clamping and unclamping lol. ![]() The exhaust shop is FINALLY finishing the car on Friday. I've got my base ROM from 2000RS-Turbo and after that she'll be ready to go following some tuning.

WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO build complete!
![]() She's all done and I went for a little bit of a cruise. Andrew's base map worked awesome! Here's some pics and a some short vids =] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() First Start! Random Interior Vid Short Idle HOWEVER, it's not 100% all good news When I'm building boost my factory tach goes to 0 and pegs out until I vent during a shift. Not really sure what is going on, but I put an aftermarket 52mm tach gauge in and connected its signal to the tach wire behind the gauge cluster; however, it constantly reads 0. Gonna have to have a look. If anyone has any ideas let me know.

Thanks a lot man! I'm planning on doing a few car shows with my friends now that she's all built. I need to take the lambo doors off and get new fenders and whatnot though before any of that happens.

nice build. did you ever get a mbc? yea the draw throw setup is better since our maf's don't like blow through much. that is why every mitsu uses draw through from the factory (evo's and 2g's). nice to see another turbo build done. almost makes me want to do one lol

Thanks Chavez. I never did buy an MBC; however, it's next on my purchases probably. I would like to run 12PSI for a while beforehand though. I noticed my stupid oil sandwich was leaking a little bit so tomorrow I need to jack the car up and get under there and see what's up and fix that leak.
I think I'm also going to need one of those flex radiator hoses because though mine is wrapped, the manifold burned a hole right through the exhaust wrap haha. Andddd lastly I need to figure out this electrical issue. I can't tell where my RPMs are at because my factory tach pegs at 0 while building boost and the little 52mm one I put in constantly reads 0.

I had the same issue with the tach. I forgot what it was, I just texted p1aya he should know. Its some wires that have to be looped off the ecu.

also just cut the upper rad hose shorter where it hooks the the radiator. Taking a inch off right there will make it clear the manifold. And send me some logs!

Thank you all. I have a new found obsession with driving by joggers, getting on it a little bit before I get to them and then chopping the throttle right next to them to vent and scare the hell out of them.
Fixing my oil leak as we speak. Taking a lunch break.

Here's another random question. Is it normal for the OEM Evo VIII 16G turbo to turn white???
![]() I'm assuming it's normal from the heat, as those bolts also turned whitish colored.

I'm pretty sure it was painted. Looked black a few pictures back, if it is than that is the root of your white-ness.

It definitely appeared slightly black, it must have been painted. I just assumed it was OEM since there was hardly any exhaust carbon on the blades like it was barely used.

Alright so after doing some searching around I found out that my tachometer problem is due to the Ignition Failure Sensor (IFS) found in the 2000-2002 models but NOT the 2003-2005 models, which would explain why Marc didn't have this problem, his being the most recent successful turbo conversion next to mine.
HOWEVER, that said, the diagram Napalm posted on how to disable the IFS is no longer hosted. Does anybody have this diagram saved by any chance? I'll try PMing Napalm as well; however, I'd like to kick this problem so when Andrew says it's go time I can do a third gear pull.

Alright well I scraped together just enough know-how from about five different threads on here to figure out what I needed to do in order to bypass the IFS.
I didn't want to hack the plug apart just in case the procedure didn't work so I simply stripped back the wire loom about an inch, stuck a vampire tap on Pin 3 and Pin 4 wires and merged them together in a splice. I left the IFS unplugged, fired her up and went for a cruise and check it out: Tach to the Future I wasn't ever able to get Evoscan to read my OBD-II codes so I took a trip to Advance and their palm-reader said I was throwing three codes: P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire P0183 - Fuel Tank Temperature Sensor Circuit High Input P0137 - Bank 1 Oxygen Sensor #2

To read codes with evoscan, the car must be in the on position but not running and make sure it's set to obd2 , then Just click read codes.

I'm well aware of how it needs to be done.
It never worked before for me, and if you look on EvoM there are plenty of people whom it also doesn't work for. It's just one of those things.
