radar detector on window question

Hey i want to get a quick answer before i would have to contact the people who tinted my windshield but i was wondering if the suction cups that hold the radar detector on would damage the window tint with the constant pressure on the two little areas around the suction cups...thanks...maybe a stupid question but would rather have a stupid question that ruined window tints...

Generally you can tint the top 6 inches of the windshield. Varies on state etc.

Why not ask the people who did your tint?

In general you shouldn't have any issues after you wait out the 7 day period. Just like any window you can't operate for a few days, I wouldn't put anything on it til your time has passed.

Our kids have those suction cup thingys on their window in the Lancer. I tinted the windows and waited 7 days before anything got put on to guarantee the moisture/water has evaporated and the adhesive is dry.

Maybe because going any lower on a windsheild would be stupid?? I had my windsheild tinted the same until it cracked and i had to get a new one. From here on out i will always have my windsheild tinted.

Like everyone else said i would not mount it on the windsheild for atleast 7 days. Just attach it to the dash or create a way to mount it to the rear view mirror.

I said why %50 because we can't have any on our cars (NC), unless its the top 6in.

It is actually a "safe" idea, to add to what film is already in the glass. The tint will help incase of any damage done to the windshield, that will cause it to split open. The film will hold the pieces together. Not sure what tint is the lightest, but I think you can go higher then 50%. I wouldn't go any darker tho.

Youre not allowed to do it here in FL...but it didnt stop me. Just like the tint on the rest of my car is darker than legal. Not like i am ever going to get in trouble for it. Its not blacked out or anything.

Plus you don't have state safety inspections like NC, but there are ways around that.

So with the "UGH" you included in your comment, implies that I should have known this about windshields???...so i'm guessing you haven't seen a windshield that was "fractured"?...other then when a person has been ejected from the car, through the windshield. How could you say it WOULDN'T make it any better?

Oh my bad....i forgot to realize that a tiny piece of film tint would keep the dumbass who decided not to fasten his seatbelt from shooting through the windsheild.

There might just be some reason for why it's illegal, other than the ability to see. I'm not a windshield expert, but Google works pretty good...

Applying a tint to a laminated glass affects the heat absorption. A darker tint increases the heat abosrption and causes the laminate to get hotter than the recommended specifications for the glass. Heated laminate can lose its strength and be more prone to breakage.

In that instance, a simple gravel dinging the windshield can cause more damage than just a small chip or crack. Hitting the window with a flying body is also going to do more damage.

So, adding film to the front glass is probably less safe than more safe. The question would be how much strength of the laminate is lost due to overheating and how much is gained by adding the tint film.

But it's still illegal in Wisconsin. You seriously found someone who did this professionally?

ya muntz audio and video in appleton did it...they even gave me a reciept and it has a lifetime warranty not to purple, bubble, or do anything else...and since my side windows are 15% it actually makes the windshield pretty dark on the outside but you cant notice it on the inside so its safe at night...ill try to get a good picture of it...

Ah yes, Kaukauna, the wonderful little town a few miles north on the 41 where I received a speeding ticket from a state trooper on my way to the Packers NFC Championship game in January.

HAHA..i get your point. I however wasn't setting my point on the tint stopping someone from going through the window. I was just stating that its only a benefit to have. (added film to have a stronger resistance of shattering, and the darkness to block the bright sun.) Thats it. I now see though that Google says it's not such a good idea, and those sites give their reasons. To each their own.
It's all good tho my man. You bad

A windshield produces very fine pieces of glass when it breaks and having the windshield tinted will keep all of that from going into your eyes in case of an accident. At one of my competitions I rolled my truck busting the windshield in the upper left corner. I got a little glass in my eye but if it wasn't for my tint strip at the top I'm sure my eyes would have been filled with glass. Sorry to bring this thread back up but I thought I'd share my experience.

I too have a radar detector mounted to the windshield and was gonna tint it also. After reading this thread I think I'm gonna hold off on that now. I don't wanna sacrifice safety for style.
