I normally don't curse... but.. %@$^!!!!
So I'm driving along, heading to the girlfriends house when I went over a bridge. I went over the metal lip that attaches the bridge to the road and POP!!!!!
Note, that I didn't wreck, I wasn't speeding and I didn't run into anything. But.. I've only had these wheels and tires for 2 weeks!!!!!! I wanted to get some feedback here because this can't be normal. Right? I'm going to have to order a new wheel and a new tire and I'm wondering if somebody else is at fault here. Could this be a defective tire? I checked the tire pressure on all of the remaining 3 tires and the pressure was 42 psi. Max pressure on the tire is 50. I don't know but one thing for sure, first thing out of my mouth was $@^%!!!!

I suggest you speak to the city/county about this. Does the steel expansion joint stick up excessively past the surface of the road?

Wow I've never seen that happen quite like that, usually it's a more catastrophic failure of the tire. That cut looks so clean. Sorry to see this happen man, I'd definitely look into getting some damages from the municipality or something. Also, maybe a rim shop can save the wheel. Hope you get set right soon.

Would the city really replace that tire/wheel though? They'd come up with some excuse not to and try to say I wreck or hit a curb or something. I didn't think it was normal at all. The tire size is 225/40 18. Pressure was 42 (that's what the place set it that mounted the tires). The tires were only about hundred dollars a piece, was all I could afford. But I didn't think that was normal either. Defective tire maybe? I think I'm gonna ride out to that bridge tomorrow and take a closer look at it's construction.

Measure that steel bit and measure other ones in the area, I bet that one is up way high. It was high enough to deflect the tire and punch the rim like that, imagine what it would do to a motorcycle?

I have heard of instances where the city reimbursed people for damage from big potholes and such. Go back there and take photos of that metal thing. It's not a faulty tire, look what the metal joint thing did to the rim!
They certainly won't replace it if you keep quiet about it. Also if you don't report it, others can be damaging their cars as well until they fix it. |

I guess it's worth a try anyway. But not very optimistic on them replacing it. Think it's possible I got a flat tire right before going over the bridge and with the tire flat, damaged the wheel? I know it's not very likely, but possible.
So I'm guess I can rule out improper tire pressure and tire defect. I'll get some pics of the bridge tomorrow.

No, the rubber is split right where the steel hit it.

wow... look at all the rust on my rotors and calipers... I'm thinking I'd better pick up some cheapo caliper paint today.
er... as soon as the electric comes back on in town. stupid storm. Anyway, I'm thinking black? And a set of those $8 caliper stickers in that club3g store? yah. Will prolly just be a halfass job on the painting, but it'll be better than all that rust. Anyway, bout to head out and take a closer look at that bridge.

Soooo, I went to the bridge and didn't even see anything significant enough that would have done that sort of damage to my tire. Was a little lip there, but nothing that was so severe that it would pop a tire and bend up a wheel.
I didn't see anything laying in the road, nothing. I gotta be honest, I'm dumbfounded.

Well hell, go back to where you got the tires/wheels and bitch that it must have gone flat and that's why it caused so much damage. Show them photo's of how little the lip is.
