Amp vs. new stereo

I recently bought a 2001 Spyder from a dealer in my town. Part of the contract was that he would fix the stereo, but he's trying to send me to a shop that I refuse to use. They have a horrible reputation for causing damage to vehicles and using bad equipment.
I decided to go to a professional shop, they found the amp unplugged, so plugged it in to test. It promptly caught on fire.
Long story short, I need to decide...new stereo or replace the amp. It looks like I will have to get a used amp, which means it may fail and cause the same problem. Now I'm a bit worried about a fire starting under my passenger seat.
What is the best, affordable stereo to replace my factory system with?

I would also be interested in compatible after market amps. Thanks for any help!

i suggest you look into the metra 'amplifier bypass kit'. it gives you a bunch of wire, and brings the speaker wire up to the radio, allowing you to power all the speakers through an aftermarket deck of your choosing. much simpler, and less risk of fire!

Thank you, I will check into that! I'm so paranoid about another fire!
