Same thing likely here for us after we have an IT-wide department meeting on the 15th of July following the start of the new fiscal year. But of course corporate is keeping their mouths shut and leaving us in the dark. At this point, I've been so fed up with the hostility of my work environment and the mediocrity of the management as well as certain employees that a layoff would almost be a relief. I'm probably just going to dump IT altogether and do something else that makes better money and makes me happy; namely, being my own boss.

No plans to, the week I spent in the Keys took the place of Sanibel. My sister and her husband moved to Anchorage so the family vacation had to be extra early this year.

Good to hear from you Sam. Around the same time frame my uncle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer, had surgeries, chemo, radiation. It's now spread throughout his body and we're down to the final months (hopefully), so hearing a more positive outcome like you've had makes me happy.

Have you heard of Gerson Therapy? Some type of cancer diet. He didn't do that, but I wondered if you'd heard of it or tried any type of special diet going through this whole process? I've heard there are certain foods that can feed cancer.

I am so very sorry to hear that news. My thoughts and prayers are with you and him. I am really very sorry to hear that. I'm so very fortunate I can't even really find the words to express it; and at the same time hearing about your family member's battle is so very sobering.

You know that sounds vaguely familiar, as I think someone had mentioned that to me, but I honestly don't remember all of the details. You are also among many that have told me there are certain things that for lack of a better term, 'promote' cancer. I received some literature about the specifics and I will have to revisit it now that you mentioned it.

It's really a shocking statistic, but either last week or the week before the place where I got my treatment, Moffitt Cancer Center had a press release that said one out of two men will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. That is pretty shocking. Hopefully the future medical advances remove that type of statistic from both women and men.

The latest and greatest from one of the most amazing men I know!!!

Hey everyone,
Today marked another trip to Moffitt for a regularly scheduled visit, today also marked me being able to see the most pre-eminent specialist in the field of Medullary Cancer worldwide, Dr. Bryan McIver. Among many things I learned today is that my life will never be free from cancer, Iím probably going to have it in some form or fashion until itís time for me to move on. But this isnít as bad as it sounds.

Where my cancer is located makes it unique from a treatment standpoint and at the same time difficult to eliminate. Since my cancer is now basically in my lymph nodes that makes it alright. Itís alright because your lymph nodes are what make up your immune system. My immune system is essentially currently suppressing any more growth of cancer. What makes it difficult to work with is that when my original surgery happened to remove my cancerous thyroid gland and the affected lymph nodes my windpipe and vocal cords were damaged and now thereís tons of residual scar tissue remaining.

Whatís concerning about that is I now have only one functioning vocal cord. If you remember, or if you didnít know, your vocal cords are for more than just talking, they also move the air up from your lungs to your mouth and nose so you can breathe. Because I only have one cord thatís working, I have less than half a normal persons breathing capacity. Whatís interesting about this type of cancer I have is that it doesnít respond to chemo, or radiation, or any type of treatment you are probably familiar with. This type is only treated by removing it surgically. And while I still have cancer (thatís basically inert) if they were to go back into my neck to remove the affected lymph nodes thereís a strong chance that I could permanently lose my voice, lose the ability to breathe without having a permanent tracheostomy tube installed, and permanently lose the ability to swallow, which means my life would be spent eating via a feeding tube. Yeah, so thatís a lot of negatives. And ultimately what the problem is that yes, they could very well remove the infected lymph nodes, but that doesnít actually guarantee it would remove it all as it could pop back up somewhere else in my neck. So if I have to go under the knife again at least around my neck, itís a last-resort kind of play.

The fact that I have only one vocal cord working also explained a lot of other issues Iíve been facing. Iíve been running for months now and I could never increase my distance, it was incredibly hard to breathe. Duh, now I know why, I canít ingest enough air to stay at an increased aerobic demand, so I have to try and find a happy medium of not taxing myself too much and I should still be able to run, just at a wildly different pace than Iím used to. Also Iíve been ludicrously tired for about the past six months. Itís hard to describe this kind of tired because my whole life Iíve been tired, I never get enough rest, I always burn the candle at both ends so Iíd gotten used to being tired, but this kind of tired is hard to describe. I could probably sleep all day, every day if I sat down long enough. Dr. McIverís theory is that since I only have one cord working, and since everything inside my neck is still very swollen, Iím not getting nearly enough oxygen when I sleep, basically I may have sleep apnea. So the first step is to have me sleep with an oxygen monitor on my finger. Those readings will determine if I need to have a sleep study done, and if I in fact have sleep apnea, of course I canít face a simple treatment that others get with forced air, because my issue isnít opening an airway, my airway can only open so much. So again, trying to avoid surgery for that I will be sent to a speech therapist in the hopes that my one good vocal cord will be strengthened up, and with any luck I can maybe get my bad one working again, and just go back to plain oleí being tired all the time, lol.

So what Iím at is monitoring, what Dr. McIver told me is that he was formerly at the Mayo clinic for the past 17 years. While he was there, a patient that he took care of was diagnosed with the same exact thing I have, and when McIver became his physician that patient already had medullary cancer for 13 years and now all these years later, heís doing just fine at 70. Heís never had additional surgery or treatment, heís just been getting his check-ups every six months and having everything charted. So letís hope Iím as fortunate as that fellow.

I also learned from Dr. McIver that should my cancer spread it generally follows a specific path, either in my lungs, my kidneys or my liver. And while that doesnít sound pleasant, since it wonít be my neck, surgery is possible, and with all of the technological advancements nowadays even if it were to wind up in my lungs (which used to be hard to treat) I have multiple options to remove it.

So thatís all the news, Iím going to be living with cancer, but it sounds worse than it is. Should it progress it most likely will wind up somewhere treatable and hopefully over time Iíll be able to get my other vocal cord working again so I can breathe normally. Let me rephrase that, Iím going to get my other vocal cord working again so I will breathe normally.

Not too much. Sam is still having his markers tested (blood work) every 3 months. They were both a bit higher with the latest tests. Still not overly concerned, as we all know he has the 2 cancerous/"tumored" lymph nodes in his neck. We head back to the cancer center in May and will probably have a better update for y'all! Thanks for checking in Chad! We both really appreciate it.

Here's Sam's latest update:

“Chronic, but stable”; two terms that I will hopefully get to know for a long time to come. Last week I had my regularly scheduled six-month appointments at Moffitt down in Tampa. The appointments consisted of having a thorough ultrasound done in my neck area, and then discussing the results the next day with my Endocrinologist.

The ultrasound confirmed what we already knew, that the right side of my neck (where the cancer was originally discovered) still has “dirty” spots of something hanging around in there. They might be more cancer, they might be scar tissue, they might be croissants and unicorns for all I know, but they are there and as long as they aren’t doing anything then they don’t need to be touched.

My appointment with my doc also showed me how my cancer treatment is viewed, at least in my doctor’s eyes. He told me that this time is spent collecting data. He’s not overly concerned with the swings in my blood drawn cancer levels—he’s more concerned with collecting the appropriate data so that he can better understand what’s going on with my cancer. He told me that my disease and its ups and downs should be looked at like individual frames of motion within a larger movie. All these frames he sees from my blood work every three months is helpful, but that I should not be alarmed if they vary much between samples. And that’s what I am going to do, not be alarmed.

If you recall my last update about being ludicrously tired all the time because I don’t sleep well because I only have one functioning vocal chord, that still holds true, but apparently my throat is still swollen and healing, and when I go back down to Moffitt this fall they’ll conduct some tests to see if things are progressing in the hopes that I will be able to breathe like a normal person again one day—which would allow me to sleep in a better fashion than which I currently occupy, (that consists of very brief sleep and lots of tossing and turning).

So with all that information, I accept “chronic, but stable” as pretty alright terms. I’ve got nothing to freak out about, and I’m just going to keep on going through life like nothing has happened. So I’ve got six more months to go until my next appointment and more data collection to get cobbled into the movie of my life.

Sam:
I hope that your other vocal cord gets better, or if it doesn't that you find some way to sleep better. I also hope that your blood work gets better as well. I am glad that you are still with us. Getting older, while not horrible, has not been as expected for me. Things I could do without thinking about it have become verboten. I have high blood pressure and high triglycerides. I abstain from drinking most everything except for water. I have to exercise regularly and still can't get rid of a spare tire. Hair that was jet black is now turning white all over -- although for guys the axiom, "it doesn't matter what color it is, as long as you have it" is probably more appropriate. Still, waking up in the middle of the night to pee every night is something new as well.

Well, hang in there and I'm crossing my fingers that your next tests either in September or December will be improved, as well as the general condition of your neck area.

It's that time again. Sam and I will be traveling to Moffitt Cancer Center on the 18th of June for his 6 month check-up. Talk about some serious stress! Sam as always handled all of this like a champ. Just a reminder, his last visit in a nutshell, "Chronic but stable." Lets hope for the same or better results this time! Please keep the prayers going for Sam. We both appreciate all the love, prayers and support we have received since Sam was diagnosed with this nasty disease of cancer. Love y'all!

WOW! Sorry to hear about this Sam. I wish you all the best. I just peeked in here and ran across this thread, it really took me for a loop. Mrs. Wavmixer also has a thyroid nodule and so far it is not cancerous, but we have it checked every 6 months
