My 02 Eclipse GT, runs well overall with a full tank of ethanol free octane 93 but for some odd reason i can't understand is that my Eclipse runs so much better faster and stronger with only a third tank of gas or less. When I fill it up with ethanol free octane 93 gas she runs slower and doesn't put me in my seat when she is only at a third of a tank or less.

Known problems as of this post: manifold catalytic converter needs replacing but isn't hindering performance or causing any real breathing issues for now, Eclipse has issues starting up when warmed up but starts warmed up just after putting gas into the fuel tank. At idle the clutch makes rattling noises but when I push down on the clutch the rattling goes away and sometimes if I push on the clutch pedal a little and let off slowly I can get the rattling to quiet down or stop altogether but I can't seem to get it to do that when the car is all warmed up.

Known performance mods and reaplcement parts as of this post: long big bore high performance air intake system with big Edelbrock air filter, metal throttle body spacer, high performance cat back exhaust system, NGK performance ix series plugs and blue performance NGK wires, Aisin timing belt kit and Aisin water pump, Exedy stage 1 racing clutch and lightweight chrome olly flywheel, Delphi fuel pump and cleaned fuel tank, slotted performance brakes ceramic brake pads (EBC), Continental extreme contact ( z rated ), RedTop Optima Battery, distributor replaced, alternator replaced, Continental belts, new pulleys, up and downstream oxygen sensors replaced, front catalytic converter has been replaced, Monroe Gas Charged Coil over Struts front and back, lower tie rod ends replaced, 18 inch alloy rims with steel spiked lug nuts.

Known carbon cleaners / fuel cleaners and coolant / coolant boosters used as of this post: Gumout All in one complete fuel system cleaner / carbon cleaner, STP Pro Series intake valve cleaner ( Helped ALOT ), Prestone 50/50 Platinum mixed with Water Wetter ( Helped ALOT ).

Did this problem start AFTER the fuel pump was replaced?
The symptoms don't make sense, unless perhaps the fuel pump isn't sitting low enough in the tank to suck gas properly with less than a third tank?

The fuel pump has been replaced twice actually. There was a lot of junk in the fuel pump that was replaced and then after 6 to 8 months down the road I reported to my mechanic that it seems as though the fuel pump is still having problems again and then my mechanic replaced with a Delphi fuel pump. Oh and the fuel injectors have been replaced as have the internal gaskets and valve cover gaskets with Victor Reinz and Fel Pro Gaskets.

Do you have a check engine light for your evap system?

It's not uncommon for the throw out bearing to cause a rattling noise at idle with your foot off the clutch.
yes the check engine light has been on since I bought the car. I must mention that the Eclipse I bought was sitting for a while and I had to replace the transmission and I've replaced a lot of sensors and parts on the Eclipse since.

Oh and also my mechanic is basically a master mechanic and he is extremely thorough about how the parts are taken off anywhere on the vehicle and replaced.

The P0401 code is a pretty common issue with these cars. I just fixed it on mine last winter. It is quite often not the EGR valve itself, but the 2 control devices that change the electronic signal from the ECU to a vacuum signal that actually opens the EGR valve. I chose to replace both of them, as they were not that expensive. The code for that cat. is self-explanatory. You need to replace the cat. Expensive but, the engine will not run correctly until you do it because the down stream O2 sensor will keep trying to correct the fuel mixture until it is fixed. As with all emissions repairs, you need to clear all the fault codes with a proper scan tool and then disconnect the battery when you are done for an hour or so, then reconnect it to allow for the fuel trims to reset themselves. It then takes some time for everything to adjust back to normal. ...J.D.

Your mechanic should be able to connect a hand vacuum pump to all the components and determine what's wrong. The procedures are in the Factory Service Manual at tearstone.com, section 17-98 to 17-101.

Also, let your mechanic know that there's a tiny airflow restrictor in one of the vacuum lines. If soot builds up in the restrictor, it will reduce airflow so much that you'll get a P0401. The restrictor is documented in the Factory Service Manual vacuum line diagrams, but it's not listed as one of the EGR troubleshooting steps. The restrictor is inside a 2" long vacuum line attached to the EGR vacuum control valve.

In conclusion the only thing I might add is do not let these problems go to long. You can ruin the "cats" or the oxygen sensors making the repairs even more expensive. ...J.D.

I'm very happy that you and Jelazar replied to me with all this great information. Now I can really get all of this fixed / repaired etc.
