Car-buying decision help

Alright guys, looking for some opinions. I'm thinking of getting a new vehicle. Had the eclipse since September of 2000 and want an upgrade. I'm having some trouble finalizing my decision about what to get myself, though.

Here is my dilemma:

I'm trying to look ahead a bit and try and get something that will prove to be practical not just now, but in the future as well (family, etc.). I'm still single now, about to turn 24 with no immediate plans of getting married (at least not for another 2 years or so). However, I DO understand that when the time comes to get a house, etc., I don't want to have to be worrying about how I'm going to haul the kids around and all that other "fun stuff". :D

I had three main vehicles in mind:

2008 Infiniti G35 Sedan

Advantages:
  • Most "luxurious" of the three, IMO
  • Fits my current personality the best
  • Did I mention I think it's gorgeous?

Disadvantages:
  • Little on the expensive end
  • Not quite as loaded with features as the other two (for what I can afford)

2009 Dodge Journey

Advantages:
  • Practical
  • Can afford the R/T, with all the trimmings (Nav, DVD, back-up camera, etc) for prob. <= the others

Disadvantages:
  • 1st model year :happysad:
  • Can I trust Dodge?
  • Least -looks of the three IMO
  • Gas?

2007-2009 Murano

Advantages:
  • Like the way it looks (At least more than the journey)
  • Can get it nicely equipped for around $30k prob.
  • Always heard nothing but good things about Nissan vehicles (reliability, etc.)

Disadvantages:
  • Gas?

What do you guys think? Should I throw caution to the wind and splurge on the G35?

*Disclaimer*:
I know that, in the end, the only thing that matters is how I feel about the purchase. I just wanted to hear some opinions from other people on here.

Might get more help in the "Other Cars" forum, moving there.
Personally. I'd go with the G35! They are pretty sporty too, no need for a sports car!
Pontiac G8:

Meh. They had one at the local dealership here. Front end is not so great in person. :(
Have you considered a Magnum? I guess I have a soft spot for them or something, because I love them. I'm sure you could get a slightly used one with nice options for less than 30k. In fact, I'm pretty sure if you look around a little you could get a loaded one for less than 30k that's an 06 or 07. In fact, I'm pretty positive you could get an SRT-8. Something to consider...

Haven't really considered it. Never liked station wagons, although it does look mean as hell for being one :D

High-HP is not really a priority, especially
Out of all the cars mentioned so far, the infiniti will be priced the highest, but cost you the least overall due to resale value. Do you like to trade every 3-4 years or something you want to hang onto for 8+ years. If you trade often, the G8 (based on past GM results, Mav), the dodges, and even the nissan murano will depreciate by a larger percentage than the infiniti.
What about Lexus IS-250/350?

Granted, 360 hp and 385 tq is nothing to be ashamed of, but I am not really in need of that much power at the expense of luxury. Power is low on my priority list.

What about Lexus IS-250/350?

That would be right up there with the Infiniti, but my VPP discount does not apply to Lexus vehicles. :( As such, I may have a hard time getting as good or better a deal than a G35 or any of the other vehicles mentioned.
The only advantage I see the Journey having is the lifetime powertrain warranty but again that is only if you want to keep the car for a while. Why not look into a Charger RT or a new fully loaded Camry?

The intent is to keep the car for quite a while. Like I said, it's something I want to look good in now but also use it as a bonafide family vehicle in the future. The only exception to that rule would be with the G35, where if I saw that I really did need something, I know it should have good resale value to where I could probably get a decent used SUV/minivan at that time. The lifetime powertrain warranty is a HUGE plus. Anything engine/trans related seems off, take it in and that's a load off my mind. :)

Just checked one out and priced it.

R/T (2WD) with Nav, rear DVD, rear camera, 20Gb HD, etc. along with the standard R/T trimmings (power seats, cooled and heated leather?, and all the storage options).

28,171 + ttl. NM taxes should be less than 900. So, I'd be realistically looking at ~29k OTD. That's DAMN tempting :D

Didn't get a chance to stop by the Pontiac dealer next door, but I WILL take a look at it, Mav, promise :D

Yea right now is a the best time to purchase a car. I know that when me and my buddy went in to pick up his Charger that he leased after the credit check went through, the salesman tried to get him to buy it instead of leasing and said he would take off TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS. All you have to do is call around and get the best price mentioning other dealers. Then when you get that lowest price go to the second lowest and show him what that dealer offered you and Im pretty sure they'll beat it or throw in some accessories.

Also when we were lookin at different dealers the one with the lowest price only had a small variety of colors. We told the salesman we were looking for Steel Blue and he told us to wait a week and see if any customers return the cars for a different color. Well that week passed and there was still no Steel Blue Charger on the lot so he knocked off some money to pick one that was on the lot and we ended up leaving with a Light Sandstone Charger for dirt cheap.

If it's a sedan, I want to be get something that will hold value well, just in case I really do need something bigger down the road.

If I were to get the SUV right now, I wouldn't be TOO worried about resale as the plan would be to keep that thing as long as possible.
I understand about keeping it quite a while. Even so, do you realize the difference in values on a 100k import vs a 100k domestic. We are talking thousands of dollar.

Examples:

2000 Toyota 4runner SR5. V6 4x4.

Average money: $7,749
Average miles: 113,188
Total in sample: 42 sold since 3/11/08 at dealer only auctions.

2000 Dodge Durango SLT. V8 4x4

Average money: $3,632
Average miles: 113,601
Total in sample: 86 sold since 3/10/08.

I can list all the SUV's, but this sums it up nicely.

Your Charger R/T for 28k sounds good now. But 1 year from now with 15k miles it is worth 20k. $20,492 to be exact. And that is only the southwestern states. I removed all northern states.

The Infiniti? MSRP is $32,500 on a base one. Resale after 1 year and 15k miles? $25,500. Even if you paid sticker, you are still only out 7k. You can probably get one for about 2k off MSRP without too much hassle. Now you are down to 5k difference.

See my point? Pay more now, get ALOT more back later.

Just for kicks, I pulled up 2006 models. Infiniti w/ 26k miles is worth about 20k. Dodge with 32k miles drops to a little over 15k.

Got a VPP quote from the local Infiniti dealer:

G35 Journey with Premium package: $33,8xx.

Out the door price: $35,001.

Research indicates that most people are being able to negotiate a lower price without the VPP so I will try to do just that.

That G35 looks SOOO sexy!
What about the new cts?
Might be a little out of my range, unless I could get some nice incentives on it.

At the CTS' price point, I could get a nicely equipped MB C300 sedan. :ndance:
You look at the Subie legacy 2.5 GT?
Has the turbocharged boxer engine
