Hey I keep getting an EGR incomplete with no code. I need it to pass smog since its my daily, so I took it to 2 mechanics and they said nothing can be done without a code. Since then Ive driven it for about 20,000 miles doing all kinds of driving cycles and long distance drives (100+ miles each drive) so i started replacing parts here and there and still it doesnt go away. Now I get code p0300 random misfire, but only under heavyload (anything above 75mph) which i believe is caused by the egr not working. So far for the egr problem, I have replaced the egr valve 3 times, new egr solenoid 2 times, new evap sensor, new gas cap and has no vacuum leaks. For the misfire, I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor, ignition coils, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, AIC sensor, new O2 sensors, new MAP sensor, thermostat, pcv valve, and air filter. My 2 cats are new as well and i also tried sea foam for the injectors. I dont know what else to do. If anyone has suggestions anything will help. Thanks!!

My experience with this is limited to the V-6 engine, but it might be reasonable to conclude that the 4-banger EGR is controlled much the same way. There are TWO controls that work the EGR. The EGR solenoid, and the EGR relay. Shown is a picture of the setup on the early V-6, but it would not be surprising that the four has something like this. I replaced both of them on mine last year. One takes the electronic signal from the ECU and turns it into a vacuum signal that opens the EGR valve. The other one opens when the EGR is not required to vent the vacuum signal to allow the EGR to close. You might want to check out the EGR relay right beside the solenoid. They are not expensive. It does not make sense to replace the same parts over and over. ...J.D.

According to the factory service manual, a P0300 code will not prevent the EGR drive cycle from completing. Based on what you've already checked and replaced, I'd verify your timing is spot on. Just one tooth off on one camshaft sprocket the V6 and my engine sounded and drove great, but I'd sometimes get a P0300.

For the EGR drive cycle, make sure you don't have any EGR-related codes like P0401 or P0403. Then make sure you're complying with the "inspection conditions" on the chart below, like AC off. I'd also use an OBD reader to make sure your ECM is receiving a good signal from the engine coolant temp sensor. If the sensor or it's wiring is bad, your ECM will always think the coolant is cold and will never start the EGR check.

As for the random misfire code, get your alternator and battery tested. The voltage regulator in your alternator may be wearing out, which can cause misfiring and also prematurely wear down your battery.
Might as well replace the egr relay, too, since its probably the original one anyway.
How's your idle rpms?

Random misfire [P0300] can stem from a lot of things. Sometime ignition. Sometimes fuel. Can even be a low voltage issue. I just had a situation this week where my son's Mazda was doing this. By the symptoms, I suspected a fuel problem. Replaced the fuel filter and the code cleared. That car still has ongoing problems we are working on. ...J.D.
