Ugh. I hate this game but I love this game. It's a bunch of fun once you get into it and IT REALLY HELPS TO READ THE GAME MANUAL before you start playing but of course I didn't do that so I just learned as I went and then read it later and google anything I don't know while trying to avoid spoilers.

So I ended up going for trading on my 2nd attempt at playing the game and so far have amassed a tiny fleet of shitty ships. 3 starbarges, one hauler (flagship is slowest so ships don't get lost), a clipper that I captured from pirates (!!fuck if I know how I managed to do that!!), and a fury that I also captured from pirates somehow as well. Reading up on some different game play styles I think my strategy may change some as I get some stronger ships, currently lusting after the Mule because it's so god damn ugly and functional. I need to dump the starbarges from my fleet cause they're so delicate I keep having to reload saves when one dies that's holding cargo for a big payout.

Things I've learned.
Make the slowest ship the flagship or else you'll end up leaving the slowest ship behind in other star systems when you do multiple jumps in a row. T
Turning speed is really handy, to me it's as important or more important than forward speed, it gets tiresome waiting for your ship to line up for a jump and if you're in a hurry because you're being shot at then turning speed to line up is REALLY important.
Some parts stack! You can double down on things like shield generators, power generation, scanners, batteries if you need just a little bit more and don't have the money or room for a single bigger unit.
Atomic engines are great! Expensive and make a bunch of heat, but they're great. Lotta power in a small package. Oh and they SUCK power but they're worth it. You'll want that Dwarf Core reactor anyway, so you can shoot AND move at the same time...at least for a little bit.
Laser turrets are awesome!
It's hard to keep track of a lot of little ships, turn the HUD stuff on in options so they're highlighted on screen.
It's not the size of the ship it's the size of the fight in the ship. At least until it goes poof which happens easily with tiny ships. If you have some good escort ships you don't need the little cargo haulers to have guns because they WILL go and LEEEROY JENKINS!!!!1111!!!!
If you're playing on a large screen get the high DPI assets to make seeing stuff easier.
Don't pick a fight unless you can win, it's perfectly fine to sit back and let someone else do the fighting for you and then come in and take the winnings.

I've been playing this every night and over the weekend more. I've got a fleet of ships that's half decent maybe, and I'm starting to progress in the 'free worlds' plot. Something I like about this game is you can do plot missions at your leisure. I can do some plot stuff and then go off pirate hunting and fleet building so I have a reserve of ships and money and then dive back into plot stuff again.

I think I need to pickup a genuine warship, I've got a few medium ones but I need a big one now with a bigger crew so I can more easily capture medium ships. I also need a bigger income to support a bigger crew.

I see this as a game I can sink a lot of time into and have a lot of fun with. It's nice that I can easily pause it or save my place and come back to it later on.
