No, it just needs grounded to be able to watch video, or adjust certain settings in the system. You're supposed to tie it to one end of the parking brake switch, so that when the parking brake is engaged, and the light on the dash comes on, it completes a circuit, telling the unit you have the parking brake on, and the car is stopped.
Gotcha. So I can just ground the wire and should be fine?

The new Pioneer unit I installed has that feature disabled. So people don't just ground it, they require you to engage and disengage the circuit to prove its not stationary. I simply installed a switch so bypass it, taking up the job of the parking brake.
