Just got a quote....few questions....

I drive an '03 GTS Spyder with 57,000 miles. My clutch recently started slipping really bad so i took it to AAMCO to have them take a look at it.
When he called this morning he told me that I needed a clutch kit($510), master cylinder($110), slave cylinder($55), flywheel machined($75), fluids($30), and 8.3 hours labor(7.2 for clutch and 1.1 for the rest)
coming to $1580 total.

Does all of this sound correct?

What exactly are the master and slave cylinders? What do they do? and does it make since that i need both of them and the clutch done?

At $510 for the clutch, should i pay the extra $150 and get a clutchmasters fx200 stage 2 instead(or another performance clutch kit)?

Thanks for the help

That sounds high to me. I doubt you need both the master and slave cylinder. Stick with a stage 1 clutch unless your boostin.
FUCK AAMCO. My local shop goatfucked my tranny install and even after 3 months in their shop it still wasn't right. :angryazn:

That quote they gave you sounds INSANE. I don't see how both cylinders could need replacing at the same time. And 1.1 hours to rplace the master & slave cylinder  LMFAO!!! Those could be done in under 15mins. Hell, they will already have the battery tray removed due to the clutch install. :ghey2:

I bet they end up putting the wrong type fluid in the tranny too :noway: I know my AAMCO did with mine. Not only would I go to a different shop but I would be sure to tell them to go fuck themselves before leaving with my car.

FWIW, my AAMCO charged me about $600-650 in labor for clutch and flywheel replacement. I took them a Spec clutch ($300) and a Fidanza lightweight flywheel ($300) to replace the stock stuff with. I suggest taking them your own fluids as well, if you can.

The cylinders are bolted to the tranny. They are responsible for controlling the hydraulic fluids that convert your action of pressing in the clutch into the action of the clutch engaging/disengaging the flywheel/engine. Basically, if your clutch starts acting funky then the cylinders should be looked at first. If the cylinders are good (no hydraulic fluid leaking from them and the fluid resevoir is full) then you most likely just have a slipping/bad clutch. That is my understanding of it atleast. However, I am not a mechanic. You can get replacement cylinders for significantly less than the cost they are quoting you. You may want to supply them yourself and save a few bucks.

This sounds outragous to me! They are replacing the entire clutch system rather than just fixing one single problem. I seriously doubt you need all that work done and parts replace.
Yea dude just find one of your buddies that is somewhat mechanically enclined and swap out your clutch, shouldnt cost you more then $200-300.
AAMCO is real bad about bending people over the coals and going overboard with repairs. If I wasn't so busy I would help you change out your clutch for free.
Wow, Tara (blkshdw03) is getting all that done for about 300 bucks. Altho it helps that she works at a dealership. Still I wouldnt think it would be more than 1000 bucks to get the work done.
Wow he gave you an est for everything but the clutch pedal and the rubber pad that goes on it. Sounds like he just quoted the whole system.

My question is what is really wrong with your car. Get fixed what is broken.
I talked to my buddy's dad and he said that he knows a guy that does alot of tranny work and owns a shop. He is gonna give him a call and see when he can take a look at it. I am gonna pick it up later today and take it to a shop that i usually go to and have them take a look at it and see what they say, then go from there.

that kinda shocked me that they said i needed all of that done. i figured that if it was that bad then it prolly wouldn't be driving or atleast not for the weeks i have been driving it with the slipping how it is.

thanks for the help guys and i will let you know what the other shops say.

I will search, but i wouldn't mind recommendations on what clutch i should get if i decide to order one myself and not through a shop

I think we were all shocked at that quote. Like you say, you wouldn't be able to continue driving it if all those parts needed replacing. They are simply trying to CON you. I would ask to see the shop manager and let him know that if the next shop doesn't list all those same items as needing to be replaced then you will be posting about AAMCO's HORRID business practices on the Better Business Bureaus website.
The dealership put my clutch in for around $900. That quote is too high
My dealership charged me $1100 to replace clutch, pressure plate, bearing and to shave the flywheel. I thought that was rather steep but all the other shops i called were quoting around the same
i took my car to that guys shop today and the guy checked it out and all that i need is a new clutch and both of the cylinders are fine. he is gonna check the flywheel when he get the tranny dropped.

Normally he would do this job for $850 but since he is a friend of a friend he is gonna do it for me for $700 total.

Thats a lot better. I do my own work but at least you asked us before aamco pulled their bullshit. Good luck with the new clutch. Remember to go easy for the fist 1000 miles.
Just do the standard clutch job, flywheel resurface, etc. Don't bother with the hydraulics at all unless something doesn't work further down the road.
i could go with a lsd and a stage 3 clutch for that price
LOL wow if u were local to me id charge you 400 dllrs and I wouldnt feel bad for ripping you off LOL
I ended up paying about $1k for the clutch job on my GT a couple years ago, but that included parts, labor, and a rental for the day.

Assuming you were doing ALL of the labor yourself then ya, you could. But obvioulsy the original poster can't do any of the labor himself so I'm not sure why you even bothered posting...
