Minimalist Turbo

Hi I'm going to be going to college pretty soon and recently messed up my car and now that i have it taken apart lots of ideas are coming to my head as far as mods go.

Currently i only have AEM cold air intake on it, with my back tire being messed up i'm thinking of going with the drum to disc brake conversion... and with my entire front bumper off i was thinking of going turbo.

Now here's the question... as i've been reading up on turbo apps for our cars i've learned that our stock engines can take a turbo pretty well (up to about 10 psi without any tuning) with that being said... i wanted to go turbo but not have to buy all of the other accessories like reinforced rods, pressure gauges, head work or anything like that. Remember the plan is to remain minimalist as i need money for college, but i want to be able to say that my car is boosted as well.

Now i'm not a pro on turbos yet but i have a pretty good sense of what i'm dealing with, my question to you FI ppl out there is the following...

will i be able to boost my car with a turbo, oil lines, evo 8 oil pan, FMIC, and the GM MAF and Translator, along with a BOV and manual boost controller? Nothing else and no tuning... will that work?

Please dont do that. :) I dont want to be reading a thead in a couple of months with a title along the lines of "HELP! Engine blown and now I'm stranded at College!"

Skipping out on gauges, tuning, and a fuel system is like putting on a blind-fold and running full speed towards the edge of a cliff. It's not a question of "If I blow my engine" its a matter of "how soon".

I'm really not trying to be a jerk, but you are only setting yourself up for a hard time by doing what you described. You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders - just think it through and research some more, and above all - be patient. :bigthumb:

Do it once and do it right. If youre trying to save money for college and skimp on doing it right then i suggest you just save all of your money for college. Besides its more important. Tuition and books gets pretty expensive my friend. Besides nobody is going to care if youre turbo'd or not as you drive through campus. its not gonna help you get layed.

NO...logically speaking, you'll be able to boost the car, but it will run like crap, and will it blow? - yes, extremely soon!

upping the fuel system in a car when upping performance is extremely important (as you can see, a lot of ppl often upgrade their fuel system before even thinking about turboing...)

first off our injectors are tiny, our fuel pump is weak and our fuel pressure regulator is weak as well for turbocharging. you might be able to get away with the stock fuel system at or around 5 psi (WITH A GOOD TUNE!) but that is not worth it!
i would look into fuel upgrades if i were you , since the logical rule (that i tell ppl every day) is SPEND IT ONCE BUT SPEND IT RIGHT!

the other choice is, keep it N/A...concentrate on your studies, not on a project that requires a lot of attention, and will always require a lot more than just a couple bolt on N/A power adders!
What i have noticed with turboing is, you are never done with it really. Even though i have all the gauges, fuel upgrades, near perfect (if not perfect) tune, and i'm only running on 6psi stuff still happens and needs to be fixed. It's a constant thing you have to keep up and you have to make the money to keep it up. And being a college student i'm not sure what you make, but with a turbo you always need to have backup funds (just in case). So really even if you wanted to tune it all the way and make it run perfect I still dont know if it would be worth it in your position. Sorry for the long speech i'm with gsknight though i just dont want to see you blow it up. Whatever you decide to do i wish you luck and i hope it works out for you. If you ever need any help just pm me with questions concerns etc...

alright then guys thanks for all of your opinions... looks like for now i'll just be upgrading the aesthetics... lol and the fuel system... this will be a GRADUAL upgrade it looks like... not too much of a prob though.

So while i'm at it... any ideas on a fuel system upgrade? or should I do like 99.9% of the rest of the forum suggest... "SEARCH!"?
Almost a decade of information on the 3g on these forums. I'd suggest searching.
Yea, searching will get you further than anything. Pretty much every problem has been solved on here.
thanks for the words of advice guys!
all i have to say is go for it man, just don't bitch when it blows.

Seriously WTF, you say you know waht your doing and you want to get away with that.

I think you might find this helpful. --> http://www.club3g.com/forum/showthread.php?t=78046

There is no reason you can't get a quality fuel system without spending an arm and a leg. ;) Plus, you can install your fuel system, get it dialed in w/EcuFlash, and be competent in tuning once you've gathered all the rest of your parts. :yesway:
thanks GSKNIGHT for that link and um... IAmTheSTIG.. i plan on keeping this car for a really long time so... i don't want it to blow like the others have said "spend it once, spend it right" i don't want to have to repair later.
