unfortunately I don’t think B&M makes the short throw for the 3g anymore. I bought mine in 2004, you could always email B&M to see if they still make it or have any in stock. But if you want shifter bushings Energy suspension sells them along with kits for the 3G.

The RPW headers are really loud if you don’t have a cat or resonator, and you have to either make a test pipe or get a cat welded in cause it’s not a direct bolt on along with O2 bungs are needed. I personally like them but I don’t think I’ll spend the money on getting another set, I’ll most likely make a new exhaust system myself cause they are starting to crack and have some very weak points from bottoming out my car, I’ve had them for 10 years now. So all in all do I like them yeah, would I buy them again prob not.

I have some parts waiting to be installed this year but that might not happen depending on time. Plus I have a random miss fire that is quite annoying when I’m out on the track, but if I just drive the car regularly it’s a dream. With that said race season might be on hold for me this year, instead it might be a cruising car for now.
Thats too bad I'll send them a email to see if they are still around.

Thats good to know that it is not a direct bolt on because I had thought it was. I wouldn't mind obx headers (a few guys IK run those) which also need modification but are almost half price. How would you design your own system might I ask? My local exhaust shops said they don't install headers.

I feel that, always a struggle but hopefully you can find the time. I was actually dealing with a miss fire as well. Every time it rained / snowed the care would trip a miss fire code but ran fine. One time it rained so hard the car actually started and was miss firing at idle for a minute. My mechanic and I diagnosed that when moister gets into the distributor it causes the code and when bad enough can cause a miss fire. After the engine gets hot and the moister evaporates the car works perfect. I have brand new ignition system (ngk plugs, ngk wires, distributor cap, rotor) so it is a flaw with the cars design. Not sure if this helps but thats my experience.

Thanks again for the info!

One set of headers that I was informed would work are a set of Magna 3.0L headers and they apparently bolt right onto the 3g head and don't need any modifications to fit. Although, you would still need the O2 bungs to be welded onto it as well just like the RPW ones would.

Now, how easy it would be to find a set is probably not gonna be that easy but it is another avenue if you choose to pursue that as well as they seem to be one of the best headers out there! Or if you can't do that, DNA headers will probably be another option but these need modifications like the OBX to fit properly too as far as I know. Reason I say this is because eventually I will be buying headers for my Eclipse as well and I was looking into this stuff also. Let us know which ones you choose to go with!

I would actually just take the same design from the long tube headers and just make the exhaust system myself, I can MIG and TIG weld. Most of the fab work wouldn't be that hard. Im in the process of looking for a house with a suitable garage that I can work out of. So finding a place to utilize my skills is the big hinderance for me I can only do so much with where I'm at.

I have a half cage waiting to be installed from autopower industries, along with all the motor mounts from boosted fabrications. On top of that I'm most likely going to pull the motor and get a used motor to drop in and beat up so I can get back out and race the second half of the season. I'm going to try and post some more videos of the car and the set up I have on YouTube along with the progress of what's going on with it. But I'm also a old fart that gets lazy to do uploads or even record anything that's happening.

But if you or anyone has any question feel free to ask, I might not know it all but I can surely try and help.

Well some updates on some of the things I’m working on. Finally got my roll bar put in and it’s pretty sweet gotta say the fitment is pretty top notch for being a bolt in roll bar. Big thumps up to auto power industries.

I have to take out the roll bar one last time to fit the side panels back on and make some cuts.

One part I got for an experiment “expensive experiment” was this Individual Racing products shifter assembly, this is made for an EVO 8 everything bolts up to it besides having to make a mounting plate and adjusting some linkage on the shifter. I’m really excited to try this out on the track, I’ve only tested it driving around the block but everything feels good and shifts great. Again with this I have to fit the center console back.

when I get everything back together I’ll take more pictures. I’m glad to be working on my car again and having some nice weather, race car season is officially open and started. More things to come also.

I have always wonder about the evo 8 shifters. It looks good
Yeah I was curious for the longest time, they look pretty identical but the evo 8 shifter is a lot slimmer but all the linkages and linkage mounting is all the same. I just made a bracket out of scrap .25 6061 aluminum sheet. Pretty straight forward prob could have made the mount look better but I’m going to cover it back up anyway.

Thanks for the video. I like to see people making a racing effort with one of these cars. My only question is a minor one: Is the location of the electric cutoff behind the license plate allowed by tech inspection ? I would think they would insist it be in plain sight and labeled. ...J.D.

The cut off isn’t required in plain sight for HPDE events or time attack. Now for door to door racing it is required with a bunch of other safety stuff to go along with it. My car is still considered a street car.

Now, one thing I've always wondered with these cars is how well they would perform compared to the 2G guys when it comes to a full time attack build. Meaning, I wonder how these cars would compete if someone actually went the distance ad put some crazy aero, made some decent power and actually tried to compete in the FWD or possibly AWD class against other high performing Hondas and older gen Eclipses. Because I have a feeling these could possibly keep up but idk since most 3G track racers only seem to do the street class Auto-X or do drag racing. I mean, do you think it may be able to be just as competitive if we dumped some good money into these and sent them on the track or am I going crazy cuz I seriously think its got it in the 3G!

In the road racing world or time attack the only real Mitsu you see is always a EVO. 1Gs and 2Gs were always known for being a drag racing car its extremely rare to see one racing on a road course. Honestly if you put the time and effort into it you could make it pretty competitive depending on what class you want to enter in the rules and regulations is what makes it hard to be competitive certain things you can and can not do depending on class. If you were in a Unlimited class with lots of back and money I'm sure you could make some heads turn and make some really good passes. It'll all come down to who wants to put the time and development into the car especially for aero. No one knows how aero reacts to the car I've never seen a 3g with a REAL front splitter or a actual wing that is purposely built.

I will be getting a wing and front splitter at some point and time, my main concern right now is figuring out the random miss fire I get while on track. The car is well on its way to being a full time race car.

Like he said, it's all how much you spend and where you spend your money. I keep saying I will take my car to the track someday as the majority of the money I have spent has been on the suspension. And to be fully honest, where my car stands is on par with an Evo in stock form with the ability to make the handling even more impressive should I get that far but cutting out some of the shock tower to run more camber.

we need to get you on track it’s just fun being able to really test the limits of the car and your ability to keep pushing it to the limits. I loved drag racing when I was younger but now getting the most seat time is what matters to me, going down the drag strip for x amount of seconds isn’t much. Where for track events 20mins of constantly pushing sounds a lot more appealing to me.

I know people that have cut the shock tower and Notched out the top bolt for the front strut to get more camber in the front, I haven’t had to do any of that yet cause I’m sitting at about -1.5 in the front the rear has just about -2. The rear you have a bit better of options cause You could always get 2G tubular rear control arms from volk metal they also make the tubular subframes for the 2G all of it bolts right up to the 3G.

Friday I had a track night got a video of session 1 up, I’m going to try and get more video coverage of the events and my car. It’s just always weird doing a vlog with a bunch of people around.

I have always had the impression that the 3g cars are a bit "porky". What is your racing weight ? ...J.D.
This is kinda a miss conception at least in my opinion. They may seem big and bulky but really I don’t think they are that heavy. Mind you I haven’t weighed my car yet or had a corner balance which I need done. So I couldn’t tell you the weight.

I can also agree with this as well.

From what I've gathered, curb weight on the 00-02 model GT's have less weight than the old GS-X' (97-99 in this case). GT's weigh in at about low/mid 3000's and GSX' come in over 3200lbs+ almost 3300lbs and the 03-05 GTS models are indeed heavier and closer to 3100lbs+ but still somewhat lighter than the AWD Turbo counterparts that everyone can't get enough of.

The only reason I think it may seem "porky" perhaps is just because of the naturally softer suspension setup it comes with stock which makes it look like it's not as tight of a handling car even when modded. Which I also believe is a misconception as well. Although, it may have a little bit more body roll since it's got more weight up front with the V6 and all. That, and only the front wheels are powering the entire car unlike using all 4 wheels on the 2G model. That and the body design is naturally bigger looking than the 2G if we are being honest lol

I guess it is all what you are used too. Modern cars have so much junk on them. My 2001 Spyder I think is supposed to be around 3200-3300 lbs. Years ago I used to have a Fiat 124 Spyder. They went for 1800-2100 lbs. depending on the year. I also used to have a little VW beetle [1954] stoplight racer. It was only 1600 lbs. BEFORE I started gutting it to the bone. If a car is AWD that too makes them heavy. ...J.D.

Sounds like you've owned a bunch of go karts. Typically a lot of cars weight around 3000lbs. I think S2000's weigh 2800lb, even 350 or 370z's weight between 3100-3500lbs same with M series BMW's depending on trim model. 3Gs aren't to far off of typical weight and can be competitive. When I had Tom O'Gorman (pro driver) drive my car which it was his first time driving this model Eclipse he said it was very stable and predictable and that was because it has a bit longer wheel base than most FWD cars. I really think our cars are very underrated for being a track car but Im hoping I can kinda change that with the way I want to proceed with my car.
