Nothing is as light as some of that old stuff. Did not take a lot of power to make them really go. All the safety and comfort items add to the weight. Later on I had a 81' Datsun 280ZX T-Top for a few years. It weighed about 3200 in full street dress. Also a 1970 914-4.It was 2000 lbs or less. You might look in to peeling some pounds off your track car. A lot of that stuff is not needed. My 3G is for street use only so it has all the bells and whistles. ...J.D.

Sounds like you've owned a bunch of go karts. Typically a lot of cars weight around 3000lbs. I think S2000's weigh 2800lb, even 350 or 370z's weight between 3100-3500lbs same with M series BMW's depending on trim model. 3Gs aren't to far off of typical weight and can be competitive. When I had Tom O'Gorman (pro driver) drive my car which it was his first time driving this model Eclipse he said it was very stable and predictable and that was because it has a bit longer wheel base than most FWD cars. I really think our cars are very underrated for being a track car but Im hoping I can kinda change that with the way I want to proceed with my car.
The way I see it, it's in some ways comparable to it's competition at the time which was the Honda Prelude 5th Gen for a year or two (00-01). They seem to weigh just as much and have really strong handling characteristics which the SH model with the ATTS got best in class handing for a 3000lb car for Car and Driver? I don't remember exactly but it was definitely a top performer despite being one of the heaviest Hondas of the time.

The 3G I have a great feeling is very similar to that but just less popular and no sort of torque vectoring system to help it take corners and distribute power to the wheel that has less coming through it (though it would've been cool if it had one!) Also came with 200hp just like these did too.

As a data point, my full interior 2000 GT weighed in at 3050 with about a half tank of gas. As I recall Larry who did some phenomenal work with racing prior to having health issues was in the 2800 pound range.
damn that’s crazy around 2800 I wonder what he took out to make that kinda weight.

I am at 2700lbs with the full cage and still stock windshield and rear glass. I could probably drop another 100lbs with going to an lexan glass and removing so odds and ends. Our champcar on the other hand is under 2500lbs with a full cage. We actually removed everything possible then had a chassis shop come behind us and remove more before adding the cage

Founds his thread... NEWER PICS FOR YOUS GUY'S!

Well bit the bullet & just pulled the air condition compressor & almost all the lines, (didn't feel like pulling the front end to get at the resevour, so just cut the small line).

i don't know who posted this a while back regards the weight, they saying 30+ lbs. but actually only weighs 20lbs. maybe the resevour adds 10lbs. (not).

anyway that brings me down to 290.5lbs according to my records.

may look into pulling the heater core! don't know what else i can eliminate?
any ideas would be appreciated! could of course redo the entire dash but thats getting to be to much.......

Damn loosing that much weight is crazy. Not sure ill go that extreme unless I turn the car to a full on race car. I do wanna get a CF hood and trunk just torn about cutting up a brand new CF hood to put my trackspec hood vents back on. Once i get the car running right ill finally get to move on to the next stage of the project.

My son races Solo SCCA. He ran the Porche 914 that I used to own. Most of the work on that car was done here at my place because he was living at home then. Since it was a low budget car you get to the point where you either have to build horsepower, or strip off weight to be competitive. Stripping weight is cheaper. It evolved in to an all out racer. He later went on to bigger and better machines. ...J.D.

Some say, weight reduction is better than just adding power simply because the lighter it is, the more you can use the power you already have since it doesn't have as much mass to move around! Good call. By the sounds of it, I have a great feeling you or your son would love to enter the Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge. I've started reading their magazines since the beginning of the year since Superstreet isn't sold in paper magazine and most tuning mags I used to read are online now except DSPORT surprisingly, but I have noticed that what they do is they can bring any kind of car or setup so long as it was built and ran on $2000 or less. Some interesting builds were made like a low 9 second Chevy (yes you heard that right, low 9 second Chevy with a 5.3L V8) was able to dominate the drag the same way some low budget cars like Neon's mustangs and such came in top spots over the last 15+ years they've been doing it! I would love to enter it but my cars are going to be over $2000 eventually and I wouldn't want to do it with these ones anyways lol. I'd need another type of cheap shxtbox to do it with haha. You should check it out!

motor still seams pretty good for the amount of abuse and mileage on it. My wife ended up getting me an AIM MXM data acquisition and logger for my birthday and I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a haltech elite 2500 along with a boomslang harness, haltech duel wideband controller and a intake air temp sensor. Hoping parts will arrive soon as I’m trying to gear up for another outing at BIR in September, it’s going to cut real close as I need to build a base map and get it on the dyno for a tune. Here’s a picture of how I got AIM MXM mounted.

Parts have been installed car is now running took about 3 days worth of learning and installing things. Along with being on the phone with haltech to get a base map going but all in all haltech has one of the best customer service tech supports there is. Shout out to them for all the help they have provided. The car will now have to tuned for full throttle and driven around for the low throttle self learning tune. Stand-alones have come so far since the early 2000s. I will try and get some more pictures and videos made up. If anyone has any question lmk I can try and help the process was kinda long but not bad

I am in envy. I get so little time to just play in the shop. I have too many distractions. Fired up the Eclipse and drove it to church Sunday mostly just to see if it was still OK. Haven't had it "out of the barn" in probabily a month. Still draws lots of comments and attention from my mostly non-mechanically minded friends. Not too many gearheads in this town. ...J.D.

Kudos to you @chinchooter11 for taking the 3G platform to a whole new level
Thanks unfortunately I’m not the first to do such things, people in Australia and Florida have been doing things with the 6G7 platform for sometime. I’m happy to make pushes in this time of not a lot of people posting unless it’s help on diagnosing a problem on the forums. Sometimes I wish I had Facebook to post more but I’m good with out any social media.

Here’s a start up video of the car running and ideling, once I figure out more on how the self tuning and the low to mid throttle tuning for drivability, I’ll make another video of me driving around. Here’s a updated picture of the engine bay with the MAF deleted, AEM FPR, 3000GT fuel rail with -6AN lines, vibrant catch can, boosted fabrications motor mounts, and mishimoto coolant res.

I mean if you wanna go with the boomslang it’s up to you I just think it’ll save some money having to use it, it’s pretty unfortunate some people that have been doing this stuff in the states with our cars aren’t more willing to help out the community or they tend to shut you down cause of the platform. I’m actually looking for a shell right now cause the MN winters have taken its toll on this one.
