Mine came to me as a lease return way back in 2005. It had been a rental car, so of course the other key was missing. Already bought a key online and took it to a locksmith and had it cut. He says he can program it when I am ready. As for our local dealer, I would not let them work on my lawnmower. Don't know how much more I am going to do at this time. I have 2 motorcycles I want to get up and running before spring. But the 3g is running great !. ...J.D.

Now that the Spyder is up and running, I have some time to work on other things. I wanted to get this thing back on the road this winter too. Just started tearing it down today. Hope to use it this summer and give my other one a rest. Too many toys--Not enough time. ...J.D.

I once rebuilt a basket case Kawi Vulcan in the middle of my living room in an apartment complex, ground floor of course. Apparently one of my neighbors snitched on me and the manager threatened to evict me, but instead I offered to fix her son's minibike for free and promised I wouldnt store my bike indoors once it was finished. I really miss the days that you could bargain with people...now everyone is so unreasonable. LOL

I have 3 of these older Triumphs, but only one is running right now. The same illness that put my Spyder in mothballs did the same to these. I just kept one running and licensed. This year I am trying to get things back to as normal as possible. ...J.D.

Well, I finally found time to put the Cold Air Intake back on the Spyder yesterday. After 400-500 miles it is settling down and running pretty smooth. The gearbox is also working a bit better. That 4 yrs. in storage was hard on it. It was hard to get in to reverse and the syncros for second gear were a bit slow. This IS improving but it might be wise for me to change the transaxle oil soon. Just another project to keep this old man out of the rest home :D. ...J.D.

Speaking of cold air intakes I just picked up an upper intake...complete throttle body and a cold air intake for $100 bucks... It even has the IAC with it as well...
Darn it J.D... Every time I see that pic of you standing with white spyder I think of this guy...

Not really. The gent's name was Wilford Brumley. Pass away a few years back. Other than being🙄 a white man, balding and having a mustache ???? I guess you see what you want to see. You remind me of the guy looking for the steam cleaner. ...J.D.

WOW J.D... I guess you take offense to me saying your picture reminds me of that fellow. It was not meant as an insult... just an observation, and you are right... I guess I see what I want to see.
But for you to come out and say I remind you of the steam cleaner guy.... that Sir is an insult. If I have offended you by my comment I sincerely apologize... I meant no harm..just a statement brother.
If you took offense to my comment you could have said so and I would have apologized...

No offense. Just not real good with the idle chit-chat. No apology required. I am more of a tech than a people person. ...J.D.

You two should get a room so you can kiss and make up!!! LMFAO

But back to car talk...I highly recommend using RedLine MT-85 when you change your transaxle fluid. It hits the "sweet spot" for the 3G manual trans, being right between 80 and 90w, and pretty much is a substitute for the "Scott Grey mix" that everyone here used to recommend. Definitely smoothed out my shifting when I switched to it two years ago.

YES...Back to the car talk "girls". I currently have a shop full of a British motorcycle in pieces but, I have tranny oil on the shelf for this. I always use the oil weight and class specified by the manufacturer. I don't second guess the petroleum engineers that set the specs for the application. I do not go by BRAND because that is dependent on what is available in the area. ...J.D,

Yeah...back to the chat... I do have to admit I'm a bit jealous of all those bikes. Mine was a Daytona 500... nothing compared to your rides...Mine had a short springer front end and a Harley fat bob short rear fender. It looked something like the bike in this picture that I got off the internet.

I traded my bike for a 1975 Chevy DuraVan and made it into a shggin wagon...My dad sold the van while I was in prison for 6 years.

I always wanted to do a Triumph chopper. The closest thing I have to that is THIS one. It is a 2002 Triumph America that I have owned since 2012 [I think]. It is the 790cc air cooled. Lots of aftermarket and some home made pieces. Runs great. Probably one of the most reliable bikes Triumph has ever made. But would like to do a chopper based on a motor like this. ...J.D.

I almost pulled the trigger on a custom 650 Bonnie chopper that had the frame with the integrated shock springs on either side of the axle rather than typically mounted shocks. Combined with a nice spring mounted leather seat, it actually road pretty well over bumps, but it had an overly-extended front end that I didn't like the handling feel, so I passed on it.

As for my transaxle fluid recommendation, I actually did a bit of research both here and other forums, and some contact with Mitsubishi. IIRC, 90w is the recommended weight, but as with engine oil, that can be adjusted to account for driving conditions and ambient temperature. Dropping down from 90 to 85w is not going to significantly affect parts protection level, but it does make it easier and smoother to shift, especially in extreme cold climates. You used to only have a choice between 80 and 90w, but Redline came out with the MT-85 to fill the niche of trannys similar to the 3G, with additives that are not harmful. I was told that it was specifically made for the 3G tranny. Can't say for sure if that's true, but I can vouch for the results. I also read somewhere about someone doing an oil analysis with positive results. But to your point, it is NOT as readily available and typically goes for like $20/quart, but hey, nobody is changing their transaxle fluid that often to make this choice cost prohibitive. As a disclaimer, I should mention that at the time I switched to Redline, I also installed a short shifter and new poly shifter mount bushings, but even so, the most noticable difference is better cold weather shifting, which I can definitely attribute to the fluid alone.

Weather has turned sour here. Time to hug the wood stove. Got a bit more done on the motorcycle but the cold weather is making my bones hurt. Time to sit. Modified the air box to get a bit more air in to the carburators [three.] Originally it had one little hole about 1 1/8' on only one side to feed air. Opened up BOTH sides and added some bug screens. Also cut the air box cover in half for easy removal. This is a common mod on these bikes. When it warms up, and I quit hurting, I'll go out and work on it's starter. ...J.D.

I have been working on a Harley for the last week... A friend asked me to build this for him...
This is made out of cardboard. There are 24 parts just to make up one wheel... On a scale of 1 to 10 for difficulty to assemble I rate this a 10. Glad that is over.

I stopped building miniatures [cars, model railroad, etc] when my engineering apprenticeship ended and the company put me out in the field. Life got serious and I had 4 kids at home. Kids left and one bedroom became my home office. I collected die cast cars and trains because I did not have time to build them. That became an expensive and space consuming hobby. ...J.D.

Well it is beginning to look like the timing for fixing my Spyder was perfect ! In the last month or two fuel prices here have shot to better than $5 per gallon ...My two other vehicle are both 300+ h.p. V-8's. Time to drive the Mitsubishi and enjoy it's fuel milage. Here in California the politicians are trying thier best to get rid of all gasoline vehicles. I don't think they are going to be successful, but they are giving it a real effort.Thier idea is to get everyone to buy electric vehicles and put solar power on thier homes. They also are on a rant to get rid of all natural gas appliances. Home heating, home cooking, home water heat, etc. They have already banned to sale of gasoline powered lawn care equipment. This is an example of good intentions gone wrong. ...J.D.
