Well I just sold my 50inch Samsung DLP for 1000$ on Craigslist. The guy will be coming by thursday to pick it up. So now it's time for shopping :)

I would prefer a Plasma because I play games via 360 and are generally brighter

I would prefer a 50inch model, and with 1080P

lastly, I would like to stick under 1700$ if I can :) Now go!!!!

I've got a 50" Hitachi 1080p in my TV room, and a 42" Philips 1080p LCD in my bedroom. I have played my 360, my XBOX and my Wii on both sets, the LCD with my 360 using the HDMI looks a whole lot better with video games versus my plasma; but movies, especially the blacks, (well really all the other colors will sear your retinas on the plasma for that matter  ) are on a whole other level of depth on the plasma versus the LCD. If your main concern is with video games, I would suggest the LCD over the plasma, unless you are a movie buff, then I would suggest the plasma over the LCD.

I would also consider the lighting in the room you will have the TV in, the LCD matte screen looks a whole lot better in sunlight compared to the glare on the plasmas screen.

Edit for pictures.

Well my wife and I do about 65% watching TV/Movies on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD
Another 35% is gaming

So :dunno: We have a huge deck with a bay window that shines into the living room but we usually close our blinds.

Are they just "blinds" that filter light, or are they real blinds that block light?

They're huge plastic blinds that fold sideways and block light. I don't notice any issues with my current DLP :dunno:

Well, then if you go plasma you shouldn't have issues either.
I would highly recommend that you stick to a LCD Flat panel. You said you will be gaming on int and Plasmas are most likely to get image retention, other wise known as "Screen Burn". Screen burn will only be covered by the MFG if it's very minimal, and sometimes will not be covered at all with some MFG's. I only tell you what I know bro' I am a T.V. Technician and see a lot of plasmas coming in for service with a certain DVD menu burnt on to the screen. IMO, Samsung LCD 650 series is the way to go bro'

Not sure if you're even considering LCD at all, but I'm getting ready to probably pull the trigger on a Toshiba REGZA 42XV540 42" LCD.

1080p, 120hz, motion processing for $1,499. They also have 46" and 52", though the 52" is above your range.
Personally having both, overall I prefer LCD. No glare, more colorful imo.
If I am sitting 10ft away, will I notice any huge difference between 720P/1080I and 1080P? I know that 1080P is the latest stuff, but is there that much of a difference?
I absolutely love the Sony Bravia series TV that we have. Something to look into.

:agreed: I just picked up the 42 Samsung and couldm't have been happier. It's an amazing TV
You won't really see any difference between 720p and 1080p. I have a 720p set and it looks better than any 1080p I've seen. If you're planning to use it as a computer display though, I'd go with 1080p just for the higher resolution.

I heartily recommend Panasonic or Pioneer, though Pioneer can be a bit pricey. Plasmas produce better blacks due to the nature of the technology and thereby produce more accurate color.

And image retention is a myth anymore. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with it for years except on really, really shitty sets.

Check out these two sets:

One's a 720 and one's a 1080. And with all sets, I recommend going to a local electronics store to inspect the sets and be sure to adjust them to "normal" color settings.

If you're looking at LCDs, I'd recommend Toshiba.

You will not see a difference at that distance. At all.

I work repairing T.V.'s and see T.V.s every other day with image retention bro'. Top of the line Samsungs, Panasonics, Sony, Hitachi, etc...That's just mentioning the well know brands!

You'll notice the difference between 720 and 1080I/P, especially if you're watching HD channels or Bluray movies.

I agree, I just picked up the 750 version in a 52" 120HZ, can't get any better. I'm just waiting to get setting from www.tweaktv.com. I would have gone with an ISF calibration but no one around my area does this.

10 feet away, 50" screen, and 20/20 vision, science says that you won't see a difference between 720p and 1080p. I believe you would have to be within a 7 foot viewing distance to notice a difference. That being said, I'd still go 1080p just because it's the bigger number. :D
Here's a graph for viewing distances.

Out of everyone that i have given my advice, not one has yet complained about purchasing My favorite pick which is the Samsung 650 series tv.
