Nose mask air flow restriction

In my quest to figure out why my gas mileage is so crappy, I started to think about how the nose mask on my car seems to block the intake under the hood. Anybody looked at performance/gas mileage with and without the nose mask on? I don't want to go without the mask, so my next step will be to look for a new intake.

Sad thing is, two years ago I could have cared less about my gas mileage. These gas prices suck.

It has made no difference for me, but then I've got a CAI...
I've been tracking gas mileage on Spyder GTS since I got it (back in '03). The difference in gas mileage because of the nose mask is insignificant compared to driving style. The best gas milage I ever got (29.5 mpg) was WITH the nose mask on...
2003 spyder gt (gts motor and trans without the extra crap like abs and tc) i get ~34mph highway (5spd) but now that i have a bad o2 sensor i'm at 31.
Well, you guys are killing me with your excellent mileage. My last few have been 20-21. I have a '00 GT sportronic. I have changed the air filter, oil, made sure tires are inflated, etc. My driving is mostly interstate at 78 mph, and at that speed the tach is nearly at 3,000 rpm the whole time. The rest of the time I drive it like a granny without anymore full throttle sprints. I will check into the O2 sensor--I presume if it goes bad, a CEL light will appear? I have had no CEL light problems. Thanks for all your responses.
Driving at 78mph will not get you good mileage, 22 sounds about right on a gt at that speed. Remember the 3g eclipses are HEAVY .. add that plus wind drag at 78 mph.. ouch :S I think you can at least get 25 tho. It all depends driving style and condition of engine. I say keep it at 60 mph and you ill see a difference, trust me. I did on my spyder(4 cyl)

If the o2 sensor was bad.. or anything. you would have a code.. read the codes.

Also what kind of tires do you have? Ive gotten up to 35 mpg on my eclipse spyder and I even got 18 inch rims.. but thats like EXTREME granny driving and EXTREME drafting over large trailers(not safe!) and coasting in neutral ALOT in downhills and to stop signs..

I over did it LOL but i did it!

usually 30 mpg is average of you drive normal on a gs, on the gt ive seen more than 25.
That sounds about right for a GT Sporty and those speeds. I have a sporty GTS Spyder and thats about the milage I get when I drive at that speed. When I drop the speed down to around 70 mph I get about 23-24 mpg.

If I tried driving 60 mph out here (Mesa, AZ), I would probably get rear ended by some senior citizen (the speed limit out here is 65 mph). I usually drive ~70 mph, and I've noticed that a lot of people out here are driving slower now that the gas prices have gone up so much..
On the highway i do 73 (3k exactly) and that's where i get that fuel efficiency.

Ps for you manual owners, don't but it in neutral when your slowing down for a light or going down a hill, leave it in 5th (depending on rpm). When you do this the fuel injector stays shut until you get to around 1100 rpms.
Update if anyone cares:

After driving about 85% of the time on the interstate at 78 mph, and the rest of the time granny driving around town, I managed to make a 23.6 mpg. Not great, but better. Note that I have not yet played with the intake system yet. I am using 87 octane, and next time I will switch to premium. I found that I have a slow leak in my front passenger tire, and for a while I was driving about 4 pounds low.
