ok first of all I'm not saying I'm going to be the organizer of this but I will be more than happy to help and I should be the one to do the rental car if we get one. I can get a sweet deal.

anyway, this is to see who is interested in a get together later next year. I know I won't be able to go until at the earliest, very late august or early sept. I'm thinking we go later so we can catch some fall colors though...

here's my ideas.

Yellowstone/grand teton area.
Vegas/Zion/Bryce/Grand Canyon (Tracer's idea actually).
Lake Tahoe
Moab utah which has Arches NP and Canyonlands NP.
Grand Canyon/Sedona
Wyoming/Colorado area.

all of the above I know have major airports pretty close by. hotels and the rental car would be split between us so the price wouldn't be bad. I'm thinking a week long trip but if everyone decides on something shorter that's fine with me.

That sounds fantastic! I'd absolutely love to see any of those areas. I'm not sure about time off yet either.

Another idea : If any of you east coast guys want, we could do a day or overnight trip to Shenandoah National Park or something like that. I go there fairly often.

As to interest, I definitely am, and I'm also pretty sure that having the vacation time won't be an issue. I guess you never know how things work out, but right now I can say I'm very serious about wanting and being able to make a trip (and that's not something I take lightly).

Yeah, Vegas is an easy starting point, and you could do a round trip that would take you to Zion, then Bryce, up to Moab for Arches, Grand Canyon, and then back to Vegas. You'd be right at 1,000 miles round trip overall. This could happen in 4 days... Pack a weekend up with a holiday, and it amounts to a day or two total of vacation time from work, not so bad.

You mentioned late summer, the 4th of July is a Friday in 2008, and (of course) Labor Day is on a Monday (September 7th).

I've been to all those places but would love to go again. Never been to Tahoe, Yellowstone, or Sedona. Poked around Southern Colorado and it's beautiful too, and is close to say Taos & Santa Fe.

I'm open to anything. I can easily picture the above mentioned trip but don't want to sidetrack anyone into thinking it's the best option. It's only one of many...

Tracer, that trip (seeing all those 5 parks) would be pretty damn hard to do in a week let alone 4 days. is that what you were talking about? you gotta figure at least a day or two at each place with half a day driving in between...

I can do the planning if you all want. plan something out for say 3 or 4 of the parks and see what you all think.

Jason, I'm up for a weekend trip also!

Agreed after further thought. I've been to Canyonlands & Arches both, twice to each, and I'd cut out Canyonlands if time was short. It's pretty, but Arches beats it. I think the others do too. That could make 4 parks, helping a little.

I've thought up a few scenarios in my head, most of them involving hiking one place from morning to sunset, then jumping in the car to get to the next place after the sun went down. Vegas to Moab is in the range of 450 miles, not so terrible, given that Zion and others are stopping points along the way. But regardless, I agree, all scenarios are all pretty solidly packed and would be tough to pull off. Finishing off in Moab alone gives a trip a solid half day's drive minimum to get back to Vegas to catch a plane. Argh, any trip in this loop would almost be [(# of parks + 2) = # of days spent].

ok well here's a senario. one question I had though is the vegas part. so we NEED to go in or out of vegas? what about this:

Saturday - fly into Salt lake city or Vegas and drive to Zion.
Sunday spend the day at Zion, grab sunrise and sunset, do some hiking.
Sunday after sunset head to bryce.
Monday spend the day at Bryce getting both sunrise and sunset.
Monday after sunset head to Page Arizona.
Tuesday head to Monument Valley and up to Moab.
Wed spent in Moab area visiting Arches.
Thursday spent in Moab visting Canyonlands.
Friday drive back to Salt lake city or Vegas
Saturday fly home.
Sunday relax.

That's a week long trip.

short week could be this.

Saturday fly into Salt lake or Vegas drive to Zion.
Sunday is spent in Zion.
Sunday night drive to Bryce
Monday spent in Bryce.
Monday night drive to Page, Arizona.
Tuesday drive through Monument valley and/or Analope Canyon
Tuesday night drive back to Vegas/Salt lake city or even Pheonix.
Wed fly home.

or

Sat fly into Vegas/salt lake city and drive to Zion
Sunday spent in zion
Sunday night drive to Bryce
Monday spent in Bryce
Monday night drive to Moab
Tuesday spent at Arches
Tuesday night drive to Salt Lake City
Wed fly home.

:dunno: That would give us a sunrise and sunset at each place alone with time to do some hiking. Just depends on if people want to do a week or just a long weekend.

also if we finish off in Moab it's a day's ride over to Denver too in case we wanted to drive throught the rockies and fly out. we could also delete the canyonlands off the week long trip like you said and shorten it up or use that day to take our time driving through the rockies and stopping anyplace we see that looked cool.

I'm all for it, but I can't commit to anything until much closer to the date. It's always crazy here....

just to throw out this other idea....something in the same time frame, but maybe a 4 day cruise out of Miami. the flights should be in the $200-$250 range and we should be able to get a cruise for right around $300 per person. that's like $600 total for the trip cost and then anything you might want to buy but food and all that stuff is included... I can do some searching and look for a good intinerary or if we wanted to do a longer cruise (bring your GFs/wives) we could do a 7 day (Sat to Sat or Sun to Sun) for $500ish per person.

again, just throwing it out there. I guess it just depends on the scenery we wantt o shoot. mountains and valleys vs tropical beaches.

I'd be interested in either but honestly much more so in the Western trip over the cruise. Out west is a great trip for a couple guys with cameras that also enjoy beer. A cruise is a a better trip to spend with a S.O. One opinion anyhow. And LOL I haven't had a S.O. for 6 months or more, no prediction if I would by then or not. And I simply dig hiking and being outdoors away from anything crowded.

I definitely like the hike by day, travel by night idea. I also wonder about starting a trip mid week, and then ending it on a Sunday... Like the above schedules with a small shift. It would still be the same # of days off overall, but it just seems easier in a work schedule to start a weekend early as opposed to start a week late, if that makes sense. And starting on a weekday might allow someone to say work until noon before going to the airport, which at least for me would be even one less vacation day required. Fly on a Wednesday, back on a Sunday sort of thing.

It ain't just all about the vacation days required, I don't want to try to push anything real hard. Just that taking fewer would make things easier for anyone going and might sway someone to go for it.

Oh, and I love the idea of Sedona and / or Anelope. I've been to the others (Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands) and I will go back any time. But these others are maybe... a little less traveled? Might be something new. Majority rules on that though, I'm open for ANY of it.

I agree 100%, I just figured I'd throw it out there as well.

If we do this I'm going for a whole week no matter what. no sense in wasting a trip like this out west just to only go for a few days. so after we decided on what parks and areas we'd go to I'd just fly in someplace else and do a couple others. like maybe fly in up north and see yellowstone and grand teton before picking everyone up at the airport in whatever city and going on to the others.

Analope canyon is cool as hell but it's only an hour or two guided tour. you can't just go there and roam around. Sedona is a town but there's tons of hiking around there so if we planned it so that we were to fly out of Phoenix we could easily stop through sedona on the way south. :yesway:

Canyon de Chelly and Mesa Verde are sorta nearby too. The first would be a hiking and screwing around kind of thing, Mesa Verde is pretty but it's more like drive to a spot, get out and look, then drive to the next.

Not too far from all that is Durango / Ouray / etc. Nice mountains there, the real ones - the end of the Rockies but still big and pointy and probably with snow and etc.

I still want to head out west but it looks like I might be going out to thailand or Bali in the fall so I'm not sure if I can make it.
