When I was in the Army doing physical training they said that we had to alternate days doing upper body and lower body, but we could run every day. Can somebody tell me why they do this? Like we couldn't do upper body every day and we couldn't do lower body every day. It had something to do with the safety part of things.

Your muscles grow while they are recovering... Allow at least 48 hours between working the same muscle groups.

Running every day won't be detrimental to anything. Although you should take a day off from everything at least once a week to give your body some recovery. If you're gonna do it everyday, don't overdo it though. Get to your target heart rate for 10-15 minutes (usually above 140, but don't quote me on that since I'm not a doctor) and don't forget to warm-up/cool-down.

kinda like how you do pushups everyday in the army.. a little bit of running and pushups on your off days wont hurt.
