Rebuilding the 5spd transmission

So I was thinking, with a whole new built motor going in, why not get the tranny built too. I don't know anything about transmissions, so what would I expect a qualified transmission shop to do or fix? I know for sure the syncros are in bad condition so they need to be fixed/replaced or whatever.

Best thing would be to take all the internal components of the tranny and get them cryo frozen to strengthen them overall.

To focus on your question, what kind of power do you plan on pushing? Obviously, you'd want to change out the clutch for sure while the trans is out. The weakest point of the trans is the spider gear on the differential. So going to a LSD (Quaife), would make sense.

Again if you plan on making near stock power levels, a mild upgrade to the clutch (along with the standard repairs), will be all you need. Anything getting beyond 300whp, you have to do the clutch, the diff, the axles, and do what Clipse3GT suggested.
Yea I intend on making well over 300whp, but not anytime too soon. With my 74 build and swap, the only thing I plan on doing to the drivetrain is replacing the clutch with a spec stage 2 and fidanza flywheel. A few months down the road, I'll get the tranny built prior to adding any FI.

I would have to get axles custom made? I think the only axles I've seen that are not OEM are the ones callmebryan had for his automatic.

thanks for all the info. Erep to you guys.
Wow, $1200 for the axles! I didnt realize they were so pricey. How many members are using aftermarket/upgraded axles? I thought I had only heard about 1 or 2 member having them.
do not get a spec clutch. you will hate it
Interesting, my Spec stage 2 has been in for over 3 years & have no complaints!
Thanks for the heads up on the clutch Iceman. I guess I'll look into others.

thanks ahspimp, I'm surprised I haven't seen a thread about these yet.

:agreed: I'm going on 1yr with my Spec Stage3 clutch and I have no issues with it... Its too aggressive/strong for my current setup (NA) but that should change shortly (SDS install under way).
I have a spec stage 2 and have no problems u just have 2 grind down the alingment nipple so it doesnt squale. I gotta get a Quaife from tearstone because mine went boom so now i gotta get the tranny rebuilt :( Just ordered the Quaife for tearstone $1,331.63 damn tax was 86 dollars :(
