strange noise at 4k -stock auto

hello
I gave my son my grandfathers eclispe..this is a 2001 RS auto.. bone stock.
it has been dealer maintained , and crazy low miles. (like under 32,000)
so far it has been great. sporty but not too sporty.

but the other day he said it was making strange sounds .:dunno:
It took me a bit to get it to repeat , but I did.

when you do a hard acceleration I get a strange sound every once in a while.
almost like an air rushing sound ...kinda like a cross between somone stomping on a hissing cat and a sticking waste gate if it had a turbo
..( the air increases) possibly even a high pitched bearing spin but definatly more air sounding to me.

It apears the sound is on the drivers side

now the air box is stock , and I checked it for holes cracks etc.
..as near as I can tell it doesit at 4000 rpms and up.
not every time , and it did it once in park when I was checking the 4k theory...course it would not repeat once I poped the hood and looked.

I did find a short section of what appears to be a vacum hose right next to the air filter..and the fender.
black with a yellow stripe about 10" long
this looks like the same kind of hose that is tee-d into the hose comming off the brake booster only nothing looks missing...any ideas

I tried to do a google search and came across something about a
VARIABLE INDUCTION CONTROL that happens arount 4k rpms but that looked like 3.0 stuff and this is a 4 cyl rs.

thanks.

Are you experiencing a loss in performance?
Check the two plastic rivets that hold the intake to the radiator support. If they are missing, then the intake snorkle will suck to the hood at high RPMs. This will make noise and reduce performance, because airflow to the engine will be choked off.
check the little plastic clips that hold the air scoop down, may be missing.

:agreed:
Sounds like the ticket ..
as far as performance loss ,
as soon as I heard the sound I let off..
no big loss of performance , it seems to loose some but nothing drastic.

I found two rivets in the bottom of the air box
explains a lot ..like no matter how hard I revved with the hood up no sound.
I sure hope so .. sounds alot better then any thing else.

while I am at it are there any things that I should look at closer on these cars.
( or any links )
I know some vehicles like my truck have certain weak links ..like hubs, ball joints etc..
thanks.

just give it a good inspection, check out the plugs, sniff the coolant, look at the brake fluid (it should be clear), and look up how to check balljoints and tierods for wear and play. inspect the brake pad level and rotor thickness, i doubt at 32k the rear drums and shoes are worn, but its not a bad idea to check those out as well. feel across the tires for anything odd like bubbles or feathering/chopped tread.
