Tail light plastic removal

2644 Views 19 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  AnderbrA
Any one have a successful way of removing the clear plastic like on TYC tails in a way that I would be able to put it back on after some interior modifications?

I would like the inside to be black color matched to my car and then also tint the red circles, but I don't like them not having a clear lense.

Anyone have any success?
I didn't have much trouble with opening my reverse lights using a hair dryer on high for 5-10min with gental prying. This 'technique' should work in either situation.

so the good ol' bake it off technique should work then. Thanks man I'll give it a try. +1

No - it won't. Once you fail this with a set of discontinued lights, you're going to be slightly pissed off.
Well I really don't care if they're TYC or altezza cheapos. I'll be opening and redoing them anyway.

Second, codeman is saying that he has had success with this. So why is it that this will not work with some gentle prying and patience?
The TYC's are held together totally different. You will find this out once you start doing them

Because you're not attempting something for the first time, it's been tried, to I'm sure DOZENS of sets. Those who can take apart every headlight housing and have mastered this skill still haven't been able to properly break the seal on those taillights - so I know damn sure someone won't be able to do it on their first attempt.

Okay, so you're saying that the TYC's are more difficult? I wasn't aware that they were more difficult I just said TYC for an example. Anyway, because it's cheaper I will go with the altezza's of some sort I think.

The fact that I have not tried this before doesn't automatically DOOM me to failure. With caution this will be tedious but easy.

Do it and report back.
My bad untitled. I assumed that all light housing would be connected in a similar fashion. I can confirm that the reverse lights will come apart with not much of a hassle, though. I have done that! :p
i have talked with highjacker about this process before, and his answer to me was the same as the one to you. the "baking" trick is very hit or miss from what i have been told about headlights, actually more miss. i have never heard of a successful taillight attempt. but hey, good luck to ya man....
Ive done both my headlights and revearse lights. Goodluck doing the tails. I dont think ur going to be able to do it

Will do! Thanks guys.
The stock ones are welded. Taillights typically are done that way, not the way the headlights are.

I have done this to 2 sets of 3g tails when I converted to LED. Both were stock assemblies. They have to be cut off. The aftermarket ones may be different, but I doubt it.

Good luck tho.

My best advice would be to very very very carefully use a cutoff wheel to try and cut the seal. Be very patient with it and don't cut too deep. I've seen it done to tails before. Not necessarily the TYC set but tails in general.
using a cutoff wheel is very difficult when i had my chrome tyc the glue inside the cracks of it was a pain to get all of it out its very thick and stubborn. you can try baking the lights but be carefull not to melt it. hope you have some good luck with it. i didnt put mine back on bceuase i custom made some tails.
From the set of 00-02 and the set of 03-05 stockers that I did, you need to use a cutoff wheel. They are welded. I can pretty much guarantee the aftermarket ones are too. Baking will melt the taillight.
