Tie rod replacement

7513 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  aaronsspyder
Backstory, well, my girlfriend hit a curb and almost ripped off the right front tire.

So...Im replacing everything that broke or should be replaced while im down there. Ive never messed with tie rods so how do i check to see if i need to replace the inner tie rod? What is involved in doing it, and how can i get a decent enough alignment to drive it to the shop to have it done properly. Ive decided to at least do the outer tie rods, but should i do the inner at the same time?

Thanks for any help

Shake it.
Pull and push on it and if it has play it needs to be replaced. Service manual shows how to replace it.
you need a tool, can probably get a loaner from the autoparts store. when doing the outer count how many turns it comes off, then when you install the new one install the same number of turns.

you'll need an alignment after this work btw.
Bump:

So I got an alignment today since I just changed my front springs. The guy comes over and shows me how there is a LITTLE side-to-side play in the wheel and said new tie rod ends are a good idea or my toe will be thrown off. Accurate?

Is this something I can do myself? I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty good at figuring shit out. I just changes all my suspension with no problems that weren't easy to remedy.

Help is appreciated.
yes the tierods should be replaced. if you have alot of miles you should replace the inner tierods as well. only thing with DIY on that is you need an alignment after and unless you get it close by eyeball you can really eat your tires just driving a few miles to the shop.

Cool, I'll just have them do it when I replace my tires at the end of the summer. I'll get it all done at once. Thanks!
